I have confirmed that the WinDVD Windows Media Player Plug-in is to blame
for all my video freeze and sound muting problems. Using the WinDVD plug-in,
I cannot fast forward or rewind live or recorded video without losing video
    sync and sound.

I uninstalled the WinDVD product and installed the NVIDIA NVDVD player. The
NVIDIA Windows Media plug-in ROCKS! Further, the NVIDIA player will allow me
to select S/PDIF output (optical) and keep it selected. The WinDVD player
made me select S/PDIF every time I inserted a DVD.

I am sorry to see that NVIDIA is retiring NVDVD since their application is
    so much better than Intervideo.

As much as I hate to buy yet another player, at least this one works (I had
purchased the WinDVD 4 full package upgrade).

I hope this helps some of you. Here is the link to NVDVD:

    Regards,
    Rob
