Contact Categories don't work any more.

I have several Contact Categories containing groups of people I like to send
messages to. I used to be able to highlight that Category and click in the
BCC area and they entered as +that category name. For some reason that's not
working anymore. I can click on the BCC which opens my contact list and
highlight a category and it places it in the BCC area when I choose that.
It shows like "+Newsgroups". After sending the message to myself and to
the group as BCC I check the Sent folder and check the message to insure
those contacts show in the BCC area. Nothing is there. So I tried putting
nothing in the To: area and only the Category name in the BCC box. It said
it can't send a message because nothing is listed in To:..CC:....or Bcc.

I finally found a way around that. I when into Contact, opened the
Category, highlighted all the names, right clicked and chose Send Email.
That started up an email with all their names in the To: area. So I copied
those names and pasted them into the BCC area, then erased them from the To:
entry area. The email in my Sent folder now shows their names were all in
    the BCC area.

I wonder where you're highlighting it. All you have to do is start typing the name of the category into the Bcc box. It should soon become available for selection. Is this not happening for you?
I like to give my categories names that start with a number. Then they will always sort at the top of the picker list, and a unique number will bring up the category immediately. They also sort nicely in the left-hand pane of the contacts window.

Thanks, Noel. I used to do that (start typing name) and it appeared. That
stopped working so I clicked on the To: CC: Bcc area which took me to the
Contact list where I could highlight that Category and then click in the Bcc
area at the bottom and it would work. I had 15 different Category listings
and just reduced it to 12 hoping that might correct things. No improvement.
I tried adding a number before a couple categories and it worked just like
you said. For some reason typing the old name of the Category stopped
working but when I added the number in front it worked. I found a way to
test it without actually sending emails to everybody. After I got the
Category listed in Bcc I saved the email that way. WLM put it in the Drafts
folder where I could select it to see all the names in Bcc. They were
there. I'll work on it some more.

Something is weird with WLM. Frequently it will say WLM isn't working
properly and it shuts down and reloads WLM. Is there a way to remove the
existing WLM while keeping all emails and Contacts lists and then
    re-installing it?

Well I just spent hours having an OmniTech Tech try to fix the problem.
Among other things he did a repair install for WLM but it still doesn't
work the way it used to. The easiest workaround he gave me is to
click in the To: Cc: Bcc: area and when the contact list comes up, click
to highlight the Category I want, then click to put it in the To: Cc: or
Bcc: line. And then click the + sign that is in front of the Category name.
That produces the emails of everyone in that Category into the
appropriate To: Cc: or Bcc: box. Hopefully his work will prevent the error
    shutdown and reloading of WLM.

The fact that this problem still exists in mid 2013 indicates that, unbelievably, MS has no intention of fixing it. However, if you UNINSTALL essentials 2012 and install the easily downloadable Essentials 2011, it all works as it should and you don't lose your contacts or categories in the process (still, export your contact file first, just to make sure). I did this three days ago, and everything is working as it should and always did. There are other workarounds, but they are cumbersome and repetitive. This is quick, simple, and permanent.

    Fyi...
"What happened to Windows Live Essentials 2011?"
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/essentials-2011

Afaics, nothing is going to be fixed in the WLE suite of programs (any version 09, 11, 12). The only updates moving forward would
    be
    1. Security updates deployed via a new installer (updating all program versions numbers but only code for the impacted application)
    - e.g. a Security vulnerability recently was deployed for Writer....the patch required updating the entire suite of programs.
Writer got updated code in specific files, the balance of applications only received date/version changed files without code
    changes.
    2. Windows Essentials and Windows Live Essentials is legacy ware.
    3. Eventually WLE 11 will be completely deprecated necessitating mandatory upgrades (to retain functionality) to WE12 on Win7/Win8
    - already evidenced by end of support for 2011 on Vista
    4. The only other possibility may be a future WE12 (or 13) version that removes Messenger from the installer in favor of Skype (the
last major revision to the installer removed Mesh in favor of SkyDrive desktop app)

Thus I wouldn't be too hasty to recommend installing 2011 without qualifying that the version is no longer supported and may
eventually prompt or automatically upgrade to 2012 (fyi..by using 2011 one automatically agrees to allow MSFT to upgrade to a later
    version)

Quick, simple, and permanent ??? I doubt it.

Oh...contact categories work perfectly fine at this end in WLM12 on Win7 and Win8.

    I had the same proble,.
This worked for me. Go into your categories, select edit. Don't make any changes, just save it. It re-established them in some way and I was able to use them.
