Copying & Moving files is VERY slow

I have seen a few posts regarding this issue but i have not seen any
    solutions for it.

In essence, the problem is that anytime i copy or move files from CD/DVD to
my local hard drive, from a network share to my local hard drive or from my
local drive to a network share, Vista takes forever to complete the task. It
will take several minutes to just "calculate" the time to make the copy or

For example, a 200 meg file can take 3 - 4 minutes just to calculate the
time required to make the copy/move and then take another 5 minutes to
complete the process under Vista. The same file can be copied/moved in less
than 2 minutes total, under XP.

Earlier today, I copied 6 gigs from a DVD to my local HD. Under Vista, it
took nearly 100 minutes. Under XP, it took less than 20.

I think in part, the problem is the whole "please wait while vista
    calculates the time" thing.

I do have a high performance pc. Duo Core 2.0Ghz w/4meg cache @667mhz FSB.
2 Gigls ram at 667mhz. 7200 RPM SATA 100 Gig HD. ATI Videocard with 128
memory, etc. I also have the latest bios installed as well as ALL the
updated drivers. I am running Vista Ultimate (retail version and clean
    install) with all updates installed.

I do not have any wireless access points on my small network. Everything is
wired. In fact, i don't use wireless.

If anyone can offer any help on how to resolve this, i would sure appreciate

Thanks much! This forum has really been helpful!

I have the same issues. It seems Vista often spends more time calculating
    than the actual copy.

  3. Trust me, you are not alone. Copying or moving any large file
in Vista from one drive to another seems to take forever.
There is no solution to it, as far as I know.

You guys are way ahead of me, I can't even figure out HOW to move files from
my CD/DVD to the hard drive. I need to transfer my data for work and am
going nuts with this new system. I've never had this much trouble adapting.
Anyway - Maybe I'm just being blind because of frustration but I go to
"Computer" and can't find a drive for my cd/dvd. Am I in the wrong place?

Heck, it took me ages to even find where to turn off the bloody thing!

  5. It should be listed in Computer under "Devices with Removable Storage."
If it's not there, it means Vista does not recognize your CD/DVD drive.
Look in Device Manager for some clues.
