Crippling Fileshare Performance

Discussion in 'Server Networking' started by Colin J. Paterson, Oct 27, 2006.

  1. I have a network of 3 machines.

    2 Windows XP Pro
    1 Windows 2003 Server R2

Copying files between the 2 XP machines is fine. Copying files from the XP
machines to the Server is fine however when I try to copy files from the
server to the XP machines the performance is abysmal. It comes up at 174
minutes to copy 100MB of data. Both XP machines are wirelessly connected to
a wireless router and the server is wired to it. I've tried disabling
firewalls and anti virus and nothing does the trick. This has not always
been the case and it only seems to have happened recently. I would prefer
not to reinstall windows 2003 Server as otherwise it is working fine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Colin

  2. Colin,

    just a quick question:
    - does it come up with the 174 minutes when you start copying
    OR
    - does it actually take 174 minutes to copy the file ?

    (just want to clarify this)

  3. Amazingly the problem just seems to have gone away although I cannot explain
    why.

To answer your question it didn't take 174 minutes because after about 4
minutes I got a "Network name is no longer available" message or something
    like that.

I'll just hope it continues to work.

    Cheers

    Colin
