Just a thought. Before defrag unclutter with Ccleaner. Then try Auslogics
defragger - very fast and thorough.

  3. Make sure that before you start you have no programs running that might try
and read or write the disk during the defrag. That includes the
applications that start automatically and run in the system tray; reduce
    them to an absolute minimum.

    housetrained writted thus:
From the Vista M$ GUI, defrag will defrag _all_ of your volumes, not just
C:. It will also analyze _all_ volumes. If you have some large data
volumes as well as C: it will take forever, look here for a way to defrag
    specific drives:
    http://itsfood.wordpress.com/2008/01/30/tech-how-to-defrag-in-windows-
    vista/

Go to Windows Explorer, begin at your C drive, right click, properties,
tools, click error checking, make sure both options are checked. Then
follow through with a chkdsk on each of your hard drives. Be aware it
will ask to schedule for C since it can't repair while Windows is
running. It will then do it next time you boot.

    Empty your internet explorer cache
Set IE cache size to 100 megs
Run Disk Cleanup (check all categories)
Make sure that you have at least 15%-20% free disk space available for
    Defrag to work with.

    Try Defrag again.

    Download Auslogics BoostSpeed
    http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/download/

    Try Defrag again.

Read this, it might help you more than me copying and pasting:
