    Greetings,
(First time here, my apologies to any offended by my ignorance)

I am not an Admin by knowledge or training, only by the fact I’m a field
tech, and the most computer savvy person on our workforce. The servers are
my responsibility, although when it gets deep, much gets contracted out.

I now have a problem, which requires guidance please.
My file and print server (w2k) has errors in the Directory Service Log,
    which are continuously repeating.
They are all 4 “Inter-site Messaging errorsâ€, beginning with:

Warning ID 1657, …..requested an ADSI Get Object function for namespace
object IIS://LocalHost/SMTPSVC/1/Domain. The operation failed with the
    following message:

Error ID 1466,…. SMTP Transport plug-in failed to add the following SMTP
    routing domain (our Domain)

Warning ID 1409, ….SMTP Transport plug-in could not send a message because
    no mail transport is installed.

Error ID 1373,…. The query for messages for service NTDS Replication via
    transport CN=SMTP,CN=Inter-Site Transports,CN=Sites,CN=Configuration,DC=(our
domain),DC=wa,DC=us failed with the following status:

They cycle over every 30 minutes, in the same order.

These errors do not show up on my other two servers (Exchange, and OWA)

SMTP service errors on startup, and will not start from the services panel,
claiming the service did not return an error, contact your
    administrator.(Yikes!)

Anyone have words of wisdom as to where I should start?

    Thanks
    Vince

Looks like a problem with IIS - Have you installed any new virus
software or updates that would be preventing the smtp server starting on
    port 25?
Check that IIS is running (If not try to start it manually and have a
look in event viewer for anything that is logged)

Reinstalling IIS would be the next step - Take a note/backup of any
    strange or non-default config.

    Thanks Ian,

I utilize Symantec Corp. Ed. 10 on my servers, and have not seen anything on
their site about this type error, but will go dig deeper.

I will then try to R&R IIS. (I recall utilizing the lockdown tool way back
when, so I hope it isn’t part of the cause.)

I'm not really sure why IIS is on this box (file and print) in the first
place. I can’t think of any application that requires it, unless maybe CE 10.

Thanks again, I'll look deeper into your suggestions. Other hints are
    welcome!

    peace

Is you need SMTP server then you need IIS - If you have set the lockdown
to block SMTP then this will be your problem.

Let us know how you get on
