Disable thumbnail generation in Video Library

Is there a way to disable thumbnail generation in the Video Library? When
accessing videos over a network, especially MPEG2 files, the entire
experience hangs and seems to eventually time-out, resulting in many videos
not having thumbnails anyway. To be honest, I actually prefer the view
before any thumbnails are generated anway (with the video title in the box).

Is there a way to change/remove registry entries or any other hack to stop
    the thumbnails?

    A question :
To avoid automatic thumbnail generation for each video (and crash risk) ,
is-it enough to add for each video, in the same directory, an jpg picture
with exactly the same name as the video ?

( For me, I create an picture for each video that have not it's automatic
    thumbnail )
