Disabling unnecessary services

Discussion in 'Server Setup' started by Shirley Zehnder, Oct 6, 2003.

  1. Does anyone know of a MS publication or a white paper on
what services can be disabled on a Windows Server 2003
installation? We always disabled unnecessary services on
our servers, but I can't find any info on the 2003 servers.

I don't have the link but there is a paper on server 2003 that explains the
default services and compares them to 2000. The good news is that they are
already heavily locked down with a lot being set to disabled and manual
compared to 2000. The general idea is that in the majority of installs you
shouldn't even need to tweak the services as they are secure out of the box.
Granted, the default settings may still not be secure enough for some.
