I have 4 DNS servers. The main server is tonkin.com, with 3 subdomains, chevy.tonkin.com, toma.tonkin.com, and acura.tonkin.com. After making a few errors, I (probably mistakenly) deleted the subdomain acura. (It was having difficulty delegating to rta_server, saying could not write NS record). I then "new domain"d from inside the tonkin.com domain, typed "acura", delegated it to the rta_server.acura.tonkin.com DC, but no _msdcs, _sites, _tcp, or _udp records were created! Now my acura.tonkin.com domain is not doing so hot. Cannot join computers to the domain, etc. Please help

    Thank you

If the DC / DNS server where you defined the delegation was not
replicating DNS info with the other, then the other does not know
of your changes. . . Such can explain the kinds of problems you
are seeing now when you try to recover.

I cannot prescribe precise recovery as you have not specified
how the three domains have their DNS defined. Ex. In W2k
    with DCs of each domain primary for their own DNS zone;
or, In W2k with forestroot providing all DNS primary for the
entire forest. or, in W2k3 with AD DNS application partitions
so that each domain is on its own and the forest root DNS servers,
    etc.

Generally, you could look at the existing config of your DCs in
the acura.tonkin.com zone and see what DNS they are configured
to use in their Tcp/Ip, and what type of zone they have defined
in them for the acura.tonkin.com zone. These DCs should be able
to locate the SOA record for their zone using the DNS servers
they have configured in their Tcp/Ip, and the DNS server that is
so identified as SOA should have a zone on it defined as primary
    or as AD integrated.

If this is all in place, and the zone is set to allow automatic updates,
even if only for a short while, then the DCs will recreate the records.
You could force this with use of
    ipconfig /registerdns
    net stop netlogon
    net start netlogon

Restart the Netlogon service and run ipconfig /registerdns on the DCs in
    that domain.

Well, I'm painfully new to DNS, so you'll have to forgive my mistakes. I've got multiple win2k books, but they arn't so helpful when it comes to trouble shooting.

I installed DNS on the primary win2k server, rtp_server.tonkin.com with the "tonkin.com" zone. I then added our other servers to the AD tonkin.com domain, creating subdomains, IE rtc_server runs chevy.tonkin.com, rta_server runs acura.tonkin.com. This is where I'm getting a little confused. Everything was working fine DNS wise with everyone pointing to rtp. These subdomains are different physical locations over bonded t-1's, so i wanted to install and config. DNS on their respective DC's. I'm pretty sure that I've missed some steps, as all i've done to that end is right-click on the "chevy" folder under tonkin.com on RTP and select "new delegation," naively assuming that the chevy.tonkin.com server would grab all neccisary records? What should my next step be on the rtc_server.chevy.tonkin.com?

I had done the same for acura.tonkin.com, but mistakenly deleted it. While recreating, as I mentioned, the records were not all recreated. I've uninstalled / reinstalled DNS on rta_server.acura.tonkin.com in hopes of it rebuilding itself. No dice.

So, in short, on rtpc_server.tonkin.com i have the tonkin.com forward lookup zone, in there i have a chevy and an acura folder. I've delegated the chevy folder to rtc_server.chevy.tonkin.com but not done anything to the rtc_server.chevy.tonkin.com DC. The acura folder is only showing (same as parent folder) and RTA_SERVER host records, no _msdcs records or anything else.

    I really appreciate your help,

    Justin
