DNS Server stopped resolving external addresses

    Hello,
For some reason external name resolution stopped working. (Internet and
    email down)
LAN communications and name resolution worked fine.

Since I was not on site and do not have remote access I simply had the
client reboot the server. Full DNS functionality resumed.

Any one have any ideas as to what may have happened?

    Thank you,
    EK.

Is there a Forwarder enabled on the DNS server properties? If so, what are
the forwarders defined, if they are the ISP's DNS, what's the address?

There is now. I added a forward to their ISP's DNS.
I did not have any forwarding set up when this problem arose. Note: External
name resolution worked fine even witout the forwarding.

I noticed error messages in the DNS event viewer pertaining to not be able
    to 'load the zones'.
There are 2 zones, the local domain that I created during installation and
another which I don't know what it is; methimg like _msdc ??
I'm assuming it is a system created zone

These error event's were logged around the same time that I had them reboot
the system so I don't know if these messages were created during the reboot
or if they were there before. My hunch tells me that they were created during
the reboot. Even though it states that it couldn't load the zones, DNS worked
    fine after rebooting.

This is the default Win2k3 behavior, the _msdcs.dnsforestname is the Forest
wide zone that holds the forest root records.
In Win2k the _msdcs was a sub folder in the dnsforestname zone.
If the events you're talking about are 4004 and 4015, these events are
common at startup if your zones are stored in Active Directory and you only
have one DC. The reason is Active Directory needs DNS to start and since the
zones are stored in Active Directory DNS cannot load the zones until Active
    Directory has started.
You can ignore these as long as they only appear only at start up or you
deselect the option to store in Active Directory or, you can set up another
DC with DNS so Active Directory can already be started when DNS starts.

Yep, those are the error codes. Thanks for the insite.

Still don't know why external name resolution stopped.

Hopefully adding the forwarder will ensure this doesn't happen again.

    Thanks again.
