I know I can use the DVR function with cable TV but will it work with my
    Direct TV?

How does the Windows Media Center compare to Tivo? Tivo charges and month
recurring cost and I think the Media Center could be a better alternative.

    Any information will be useful.

  2. Hi,

Media Center will work with Direct TV, I am using it
myself with satellite. It just involves connecting the
Set-Top Box to the IR receiver with the included "Blaster"
this enables the MCE Box to control the Direct TV receiver.

And with MCE 2004 the system now has the ability to learn
new IR codes. I can't comment on the TiVo aspect as we
don't have it up here in Canada.

Yes. I have an HP WMC PC that I use with the Hughes
DirecTV receiver. I also have 2 Hughes Series 2 DirecTV
Tivos. (ok, I'm a TV nut, but I have 3 kids)

In practice I use the tivos much more for two reasons:

    1) ease of use -- it's more of a consumer electronic
device so it works better and crashes less. Also, when
recording on the PC I feel scared about doing anything
else on the machine. For example, you have to really
think about when to install the next MS security patch so
you don't interrupt recording a show.

    2) Two tuners on the Tivo. So I can watch live TV while
recording something else or record two shows at once.
    This in practice is huge.

I also recommend adding a large drive if you go the Tivo
route so you can store lots of shows.

The MC PC is better in that other PCs on my home network
can watch recorded shows. This is great for roadtrips
with kids since they can watch on a notebook.

How would you incorporate the directv box into WMC to
allow it to tune to the program I would like to record?

I have the Zenith Hi-Def box... not that this would
probaly matter... but I am un-clear as to how I would have
WMC talk to the directv box when it needed to change to
    the channel to be record.

The HP MPC comes with a USB remote control receiver that
works with its remote. That receiver box has two jacks
in the back. It comes with a cable that plugs into one
of these jack and an IR emitter on the other end that you
put in front of your DirecTV IR receiver. Then tell the
MPC what kind of box you have and it just works.
