Download help...Is Media Edition XP Pro, or XP Home?

Discussion in 'Windows Media Center' started by big beach bird, Jul 21, 2008.

  1. I need to download the files that allow me to create a recovery disk for my
XP installation, but the only two options are "XP Home Edition" or "XP
Professional". There is no offering for Media Center.

Which download do I choose, or does it matter?

I am using Media Center version 2002 (actually it's not my computer...I'm
cleaning out a malware infestation for a friend).

MCE is a subset of XP Pro, what type of recovery disk are you downloading?

  3. I am downloading a file (for setup disks) that will allow me to boot into the
recovery console if needed. I do not have the recovery disk for this
machine, my friend's ex-husband lost it. I do have legitimate install of xp.

The file I need is at this location: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

I just don't know whether to choose the "home" or "professional". Is there
by chance another page that would have the appropriate file for Media Center?

    Thanks so much.

The Pro set will work just fine, depending on what your hoping to accomplish
the Home set could work as well.
I don't believe there is a set specifically for Media Center as it is Pro
    minus a few features.

    Those setup floppy discs won't by themselves allow you to reinstall Windows;
you will still need a valid source (CD/DVD/partition) of the XP MCE files.

Those floppies will just get the system booted to point where you can insert
the Setup CD to install Windows.

I probably should have mention that a few posts back, but hey, it's
