I went to that site and went thru the installation process, did a reboot, but
when I go to Windows Update page, it still says it failed. How do I check to
see if the fool thing took or not? According to the installing pricess, it
    went to a temp folder?

    Thanx in advance.

When you go back to the Update site, it should not find that the patch is
needed any longer. I realize that when you look at the log it still shows
the dl as failing, because it did in fact fail when you originally tried to
    install.

IF, the patch was still needed, then it would still show up as patches
needing to be downloaded when you go to MS Update site.

    I hope this helps.

Why won't Microsoft simply fix the update procedure? (Sorry, just seems
really obvious.) Maybe the folks at Microsoft don't work with "normal"
computer users. Well, I do. The vast majority of them will not know to go any
further than seeing a failure. Not a single one of my clients will have the
wherewithal to come to these newsgroups. It's time Microsoft recognized that
99% of its users are not geeks--and yes, need to be spoon-fed.

So again, why not simply fix the update procedure?

I downloaded and ran the patch, it told me that it installed ok. Then I
rebooted, and went back to Windows Update (just to be sure), and it told me
that the patch had failed... has it? or is that a false negative?

Yes, when I go to Microsoft page it still lists it as being failed, but
won't display any updates for me to install. I guess it is installed. Gosh I
    have a headache.

    Thanx for the reply....:)

I posted this response above to JJ's question, which is exactly the same..

I will state that I am very surprised that they released a patch via update
that was broken. They should avoid that at all costs.

I will also say tho, that this patch is not that critical. At most it will
bring a system down, but as of right now no code execution is possible via
this exploit. So, it really should not matter either way. If it could be
used to infect with malware then I would be a lot more concerned.

If you go to your add/remove programs, select "Show Updates" at the top, then
scroll down to the bottom, you should see that it is installed.

  16. frank - useful for both home and [professional installations here but note
although it shows up as installed update in add'n'remove, the update listing
doesn't show it as a successful update in history, so it looks like manual
updates aren't always recorded on the stored update history on update site.
in fairness it doesn't offer to install it either. something needs tidying up
    on update site perhaps?

Thank you. This worked perfectly. I was tempted not to click for this site,
Thought it wouldn't be any better than the FAQ page. I'm 57 and this is my
first computer and am sure I'll be coming back for more help. Thank you again

You're a hero, the solution worked on both of my machines which had
repeatedly failed to install this update previously. Many thanks, I owe you a
    drink....

Thanks for the Link.. Too bad MS had all of those hours to fix, block, or
otherwise deal with the on going situation regarding the release of those
d/l's and did nothing, but to leave them online for user after user to get
frustrated. What a way to run a company. If I had done that, my job would
be on the line for not stopping Future D/Ls and heads would roll in IT if we
didn't have it fixed and back online in a matter of hours. And even then
probably one person would get the get the Axe assumming it's either a
programming error or just some typo in the code that got past someone.

Thanks my friend for working for that MicroSoft Employee today that decided
he would rather stay home and catch up on his long lost sleep missed during
that extended party weekend he and his friend just returned from.

Also, sorry you had to cancel the trip to the hospital to visit with your
dying friend at the same time. I just wish you could get paid by MS like the
other guy does in as much as he at least gets paid for his so called "sick"
    days.
