Download stops or freezes. The Windows Update - Web Page Dialog window
    appears but download never starts

I did what was suggested at
    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot
    to no avail.

I grabbed Scren56.cab and installed it.

DISPEX.DLL is the version that came with IE6 SP1 (Version 5.6.0.6626).

There was another 'fix' that didn't work, forget the file offhand,
but I had to save it to my desktop, right click the .inf file and install
    it. That didn't work.

Did an online virus scan, no virii

    Ran Ad-Aware, no spyware detected.

Used MSConfig and cleared everything in startup except system tray,
    that didn't help.

Ran PCDOCRX, which helped clean up my registry, still having the same
    problem.

    I don't have any pop-up blocking software.

Oh, not only does the Windows Update freeze on download 0% but
on a few pages that have media files that come up
in a separate window or any other type of window that
launches a web page, the page is blank, forcing me to
click the red X (stop) button on my browser and hitting
    refresh.

Needless to say, I'm at wits end.
Any help from those who have the answer?

    Thanks in advance,
    Kevin

    Kevin,
I've run into the same problem. I click on scan for
updates, wait a short time, then at 0% I receive the
message that the system is unable to scan for updates and
switches to a messages screen. Very frustrating.

I downloaded a file they recommended and made sure the
switches were correct. I'm still at my wits end.

Do you get the EULA (End User License Agreement) dialog box?
Please post the last 30 lines of the Windows Update.log file.

Copy and paste "%windir%\windows update.log" (w/o the quotes)
into the Internet Explorer address bar and hit Enter.
Scroll down to the current date, please post the latest 30 lines.

My mother in law is having the same problem. I have run
all of these as well without success. They told me in the
two years that they have had the computer they never ran
Windows Update. Could the size of the update be too much
    to get at once?
