I reinstalled Windows XP Home Edition and was at Windows Update downloading an update for my modem . The download finished abruptly , all of the downloads I have done seem to finish abruptly , and the computer was disconnected from the internet .A window asking for connection to the internet appeared and beneath that window appeared the restart your machine to complete the installation appeared . I cancelled reconnect and when the computer restarted a file appearing as a page with the top right corner folded over and about 6 ?thumbnails on it showed on the desktop . In opening the file with Wordpad it showed as a series of square zeros with a few letters between the zeros and only a few other odd looking capitals , like a euro dollar sign . Guessing from my experiences from uninstalling and reinstalling Windows XP Home Edition many times through the past 8 months from having known nothing about computers previously , I would guess I was looking at a driver file . Through my past attempts to pretend I was a computer technician I have tried to load drivers from various sources and failed to install them . On the manufacturers Live Update website 2 downloads were suggested for the mainboard , 1: a mainboard driver and 2: a Display driver , and I always downloaded and installed both . This last time I installed the mainboard drivers then looked at the status of the Display driver "accidentally" . Well what do you know , a Display driver was installed . It seems the mainboard download/installation included the display driver . No indication of both together at the download site , and all this after 8 months ! The site had a Live Update which is accurate ,I believe to date , but no goddam information as to what was downloaded in the downloads ! Perhaps I should !
