Dynamically expanding virtual hard disk?

I just would like to know if anyone here can explain *how* the
    dynamically expanding disk grows?

If I compare to an SQLServer database (which I am familiar with) where
one specifies by how much it will expand the database file when
needed, I don't find such a setting for a VHD.

So what is the principle used when the guest needs to store more data
in the disk? A fresh VHD file is very small, like 35 kbytes or so,
what happens when the guest adds data, for example when an operating
    system is installed?

Is there a specific amount of host disk space added when it expands?
