I've noticed a few frequent issues appearing, even though solutions are
available at http://enhanceie.com. Unfortunately, there is no way I am aware
of to pin a post with links to this and other useful sites, so I can only
    post this message.

If you want any of the following in IE7, go to the Enhance IE website:
    · Move the menu to the top
    · Hide the search box
    · Add a new search provider
    · Run a website that requires IE6
    · Increase the connection limit to 16 connections per server
    · Change what happens when Ctrl+Enter is pressed in the address bar

    Developer Tools:
    · Developer toolbar and powertoys
    · Javascript debugger
    · HTTP traffic logger and fiddler
    · Notepad2 with syntax highlighting

    Add-ons:
    · Ad removal
    · Spell-checker
    · Download manager
    · Mouse gestures
    · Inline search
    · Find-as-you-type

    Useful tips:
    · Want to have Ctrl+Tab go to the most recent tab and go back to the prior
tab when closing a tab? Go to Tools-->Internet Options-->Advanced
tab-->Browsing section and select "Use most recent order when switching tabs"
    · If you're not using a proxy and IE7 is running slow, go to
    Tools-->Internet Options-->Connections tab-->LAN settings and uncheck
    "Automatically detect settings"
    · Place annoying sites in the Restricted Zone, use the HOSTS file to block
all requests for annoying domains, and use Windows Defender remove adware
    · Change the editor used when View-->Source is selected in the registry at
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\View Source
    Editor\Editor Name

    Troubleshooting:
    · If IE7 crashes on startup and you have Google Desktop installed, update to
the latest version of Google Desktop
    · If IE7 crashes or hangs and you do not have Google Desktop installed,
check whether the problems continue in No Add-ons mode and if they do not, go
to Tools-->Manage Add-ons and disable browser extensions and toolbars one at
a time until the problem disappears
    · If IE7 disappears instantly on startup, go to Start-->Run and enter
    regsvr32 "C:\program files\internet explorer\ieproxy.dll"
    · If pages render slowly in IE7, increase the connection limit to 16

Because this is not a web site, this is an NNTP service, with Microsoft
using CDO for Windows 2000 to provide a web-to-NNTP interface. There is
no way to "pin" news articles on NNTP news servers.

    Thanks Rocky,

Great site. I've been looking high and wide for some of these tweaks. It is
good to see that the Open Source model for software development has
    competition from Commercial Innovation.

    Regards.

    Thanks Rob,

Many people are unaware that commercial software like IE7 has many plugins
    too.

After installing IEToys, I found many plugins not on my previous list. With
IEToys, you can add a Clear All Browsing History button to the command bar
and can add the following features to the right-click menu:
    · Remove all the images and animations from a webpage, leaving only the text
    · Look up the definition of the selected word in a dictionary or encyclopedia
    · View the source code for the selected HTML
    · Open the selected text as a hyperlink
    · Search for the selected text using MSN or Google
    · Copy images from a page
    · Highlight the currently selected text
    · Display a list of accelerator keys provided by the current page

There are quite a few, and it is very very cool of people to release theirs
as freeware. Doubly so for those that give out the source.
It is pathetic that one has to install an add-in to provide something as
basic as that, but unfortunately that is the climate we find ourselves in.
I hope Microsoft doesn't use the availability of such plugins as an
excuse to avoid or put-off adding support for such features, as they
really ought to be built into the standard build of IE7. In a general and
flexible way I mean. The ability to associate a sequence of commands
with a button would allow people to trigger whatever degree of browsing
    history cleanup they want.

  6. Hello,

    @rocky
    too.

Indeed, if you are interested in content filtering you may also try my free
Quero add-on for IE (www.quero.at). In the past months I have worked on
improving its Quick Type & Find feature, my answer to Mozilla's "find as you
    type".
