Entered URL having ".com" added by IE7

When I key a URL in IE7, and key Ctrl-Enter to open a new tab, ".com" is
being automatically added to the URL I entered. If I key a URL and simply key
Enter, to open the URL in the current window, the ".com" is not added.

How do I prevent addition of ".com" when opening a new tab?

Thanks. I've done some more research/investigation:-

I find that Ctrl-enter from the address bar is actually specified as a
keyboard shortcut that adds www to the beginning of the URL and .com to the
    end

Alt-enter from the address bar opens the URL in a new tab - you don't have
to go to the new tab tab

Ctrl-enter from a Favourite opens it in a new tab

It's a bit confusing having to use ctrl-enter for a new tab from a Favourite
or a link, and alt-enter from the address bar!
