If you are getting the problem discribed as "The error
0x800A138F is displayed when scanning for updates, but the
Windows Update.log file will show error 0x800C0008." but
none of the fixes described are working, you might have
    the problem I had.

When you download kazaa-lite there is a link to a HOSTS
file that blocks ad sites by setting them to point to
127.0.0.1. Microsoft are now using akamai to redirect
their servers and you are blocking them. Find your HOSTS
file (c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc in win2K) and remove
    the entry that reads

    127.0.0.1 a248.e.akamai.net

save it, restart ie and you should find update now runs ok.

    hope this helps someone.
