i'v been trying since the morning to make this vpn work ...
    at the end ...
when connection from a client (connected to the internet) : the "connect to
smal business server" vpn dial up gives the following error:

"the connection was terminated by the remote computer before it could be
completed. for further assistance, click more info or seach help and suport
center for this error number . (error 628)"

so what seems to be the problem .

NB: the vpn connection works fine when the client computer is on the local
lan, but it doesn't work when it's connected only to the internet.

    thanks in advance

    Hi Sensay,

Thank you for posting in SBS newsgroup.

Based on the information you have provided, would you like to help me to
    confirm some information:

    1. Are you running ISA? If this is the case, please check whether the
    firewall blocks the VPN traffic.

If this is not the case, please follow the steps outlined in the KB
    article:

886621 You receive an "Unable to establish the VPN connection" error
    message
    http://support.microsoft.com/?id=886621

Note that the method 1 'Remote Access Wizard' (described in the KB 886621)
is used when you want to enable remote access if your remote client
computers will connect to your server over the Internet. You need to use
the method 2 to enable the Outgoing PPTP access from your internal LAN
clients to the remote PPTP VPN server.

    2. Is your VPN server located behind a Linksys BEFSR41 router? If so,
you may update the fireware for your Linksys BEFSR41 router. For
information about how to do this, please contact Linksys Inc. you may refer
    to the following KB article:

329858 Remote VPN Clients Cannot Log On to Network
    http://support.microsoft.com/?id=329858

Although the article is for SBS2000, it also may be applied to SBS2003.

    3. As you mentioned the VPN connection can be made from a SBS LAN
client, the configuration of the RRAS itself should be OK. Would you like
to tell me if you use the same XP client for the test in the LAN and on the
    Internet?

    4. You may try using a different client to test to see if the problem
exists. If not so, it may be a client or hardware related issue, for
example, is IPSec Service disabled on the client? You may refer to the
    following KB article:

816521 HOW TO: Use IPSec Policy to Secure Terminal Services
    Communications in
    http://support.microsoft.com/?id=816521

    5. You may use PPTPPing tool to test if the VPN connection is good as
    following:

162847 Troubleshooting PPTP Connectivity Issues in Windows NT 4.0
    http://support.microsoft.com/?id=162847

Regarding the PPTPPing utility, please tell me your E-mail address. I will
    send to you later.

Also, you may try connecting to SBS using VPN in another external location
to test if the problem exists.

If you have any questions, or if anything is unclear, please do not
    hesitate to let me know.

    Best regards,

    Crina Li (MSFT)
