I have connected to a remote server and am trying to change the Companyweb
    homepage design.

When I try and add web parts to the home page I get either "An error has
occurred" or "One of the properties of the Web Part has an incorrect format.
Windows SharePoint Services cannot deserialize the Web Part. Check the
format of the properties and try again."

I have already checked permissions as per
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;826786

    any suggestions ?

No I haven't applied Sharepoint Service Pack 1 for three reasons:

    1. The fix list doesn't mention this issue;

    2. It isn't listed on
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/sbs/downloads/default.mspx as
    either critical or recommended

    3. Everything else is working and their nightly backup hasn't completed yet
    :)

All required critical and necessary recommended updates have been applied.
Thanks for the suggestion but I'll do some more research.

    Ray,

While you are doing your research you might want to look at:

Description of Windows SharePoint Services Service Pack 1
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=841876#5

One of the fixed items is vaguely related to your issue:

The Web part is not added when you try to
add a Web part to your online Web Part gallery

When you try to add a Web part to your online
Web Part gallery, the Web part is not added.
This issue may occur if the file name of the Web
    part contains international characters or
    language-specific characters.

The service pack fixes a number of issues and it should be on that download
    page.

I am also having this problem. I applied the Sharepoint patch and downloaded
the RSS feed from the MS site and I can't seem to add it.

    Any thoughts?
