error c00c0008 media player- help please

I am working on XP. i received an email from a friend with an .avi
extension. When I try to open/play it states to use the Media player. It
brings up the error page and references the code C00C0008.

I already downloaded and reloaded the media player, and still have the same
problem.

anyone have any suggestions to fix it. the error page brought me here.

 

Does the file work if you save it to disk and then try to play it back?
