What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
    What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Please look into error code 80070641 in Windows Update.
August 21 I had 9 Windows Updates (VISTA) waiting for me. 8 were
successfully installed. KB 972691 (spamfilter Microsoft Office 2007) was
however not installed. I have tried over and over again, including made all
the changes kindly suggested by PA Bear and TaurArian, with no success so
    far.
Please advise with more specifics and in more detail. Please also advise on
how to just ignore this update if "user disobedience" is the only way out....
    Thanks

  5. I dunno WTF "broke" at Google Groups lately (I suspect the 4+ months of MS
newsserver "issues" have something to do with it) but such
newsgroup-specific searches suggest that GG is only monitoring *very* recent
    posts, Robert.

Windows Installer seems to work ok; services.msc tested "manual" and
    "automatic".

Norton Internett Security is installed , so is also Defender. Tried to
install KB 972691 with Norton "off" , however in vain. No third party
    firewall.

If Windows files are corrupt, as suggested by the Comminity, does Vista
allow for repairing critical files through tools like sfc.exe ?

So far only KB 972691 (Outlook Spam Filter update) rejects to be installed.
Would re-installling Outlook 2007 to the trick?

    Thanks for looking into this.

Without much success I have for some time tried to address this issue to the
community, receiving all kind of confusing answers

The Update Junk Mail filter KB 972691 denied being installed, later also
Office Service Pack 2 ,and Office System Update KB 967642 , all three updates
    giving Error Code 80070641

No registry cleaner has been used. Temporarily stopping Windows Installer
did not help. Neither did uninstalling / reinstalling / repairing Microsoft
Office and Outlook did not help a bit, both giving Application Error Code
    1704.

Then suddenly a new Windows Update Error Code A97 popped up and I dediced to
    check further before giving up.

Inspired by a suggestion on "Vista Update Errors" (Microsoft TechNet)

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com...s/thread/ecd86d0e-e0a2-4630-9150-6720ba9714bd

I decided to Uninstall Vista Service Pack 2

It sure made it !! All Windows Updates are now installed correctly!

My question is, however; should I reinstall Vista SP2 and hope for the
better? Or just leave it be........

I have the same error code 80070641 trying to install MS Outlook KB973514 .
MsiInstaller installed 7 updates correctly and then failed on 2. The other
one was for Silverlight. I have tried all kinds of things referred to in this
    newsgroup.
In my case MsiInstaller will install other updates but not this particular
one. In fact the installer service stops running when I install this update
which fails and then says that installer is not available.
What is wrong with this update or why does MsiInstaller fail for one update
    and not the others?

  9. To avoid confusion, please begin a new thread about your specific problems.
State your Office version and full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista
    SP2) in your first post.

Tip: Insert your Office CD into the appropriate drive-bay before attempting
    to install KB973514 again.
