Error codes with no help from Microsoft

  1. To avoid confusion, please begin a new thread about your specific problems.
State your IE version, full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP2),
and the updates in question in your first post.

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows Vista, but only for Service Pack 2 (SP2). This support for Windows
Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) is valid until November 26, 2009. Availability of
chat or e-mail support differs depending on your geographic location. Go to
    http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?prid=13014&gprid=582034 &
    select appropriate category (e.g., Installation).

I had this problem before. What happened to me was that my antivirus software
had expired. I had Norton antivirus on my computer. The problem is that
Windows is downloading a virus update. If, however, you have no antivirus
program to give the update to, that very error occurs. Check to make sure you
have a legitimate, and not expired, antivirus program. I just downloaded the
free version of AVG antivirus that you can find on the net. After I installed
it, I ran the update and it worked. Try this out and see if it works for you.

Um, I am smoking whatever you are, buddy! I had the exact same problem as
stated here in this thread. I did everything these Microsoft people
recommended, and nothing worked. Apparently, it hasn't worked for others
either. I came to realize that my Norton antivirus subscription that came
with my computer had expired. Therefore, whenever Windows tried to update
with any security updates, there would be no active antivirus program on my
computer to receive those updates. Thus, the error would occur, and an update
failure as well. I realized that my free trial on my antivirus program had
expired, so I downloaded a free version of AVG antivirus instead. Even once I
installed it, though, it wasn't simple. I just kept updating the AVG
software. After the first time, my AVG sent a message saying that the update
process was not complete. So I updated again with AVG, and I updated with
Windows. After 3 or 4 times, the Windows update finally worked, and I haven't
had a problem since. I am not saying this makes sense to a rational person,
but hell, since when do Microsoft products ever work the way they are
supposed to? As an example, Windows Defender does not recognize AVG
antivirus, so it acts like I don't have virus protection. I had to turn that
off, and say that I have my own antivirus program. Apparently, some antivirus
programs cannot communicate with Windows Defender(unless they have a contract
    or something...wink!).

Just remember, the problem with you people in dealing with this error is that
you are focusing on the update process. That update process is not the
problem. It is the target of the update process that is the problem. So, if
the update process is trying to update your security codes, and you have no
working antivirus program, the stated error code will occur. Try to focus on
whatever programs the process is trying to update.

  6. There's no connection between Windows updates and antivirus programs. Windows
updates are processed by Windows, not by any third party program; and antivirus
updates are not downloaded by Windows but by the antivirus program itself.

That isn't to say that an expired antivirus program (or, for that matter, a
non-expired one) mightn't be preventing Windows Update from working. But if
this is the case, it isn't for the reason you describe.

    Harry.

Thus, the error would occur, and an update

  7. If you're AV subscription expired, format & reinstall Windows.

Yes, what you say sounds right, and it is exactly what I thought at the time.
This is when I say how a lot of nonsensical interference happens between
programs. As irrational and counterintuitive as it may be, this solved my
problem. So, I hope it can help anyone else out there. Perhaps people should
look at the specific programs that may be related to the update that is not
installing, and update or re-install those. WIndows update is not the problem
    with this error code.
