It should not, I believe your friends list is stored online.

You can go to and login to your steam
accoun there, you should see all your friends listed there.

Try it from a different system if you're really worried, but as I recall
the Friends list is stored online, not on your computer.

    I've got the fix...

Saw this somewhere dont remember who to give credit too =/

"BEFORE you do this, make sure this is actually the problem. One eas
way to tell is by trying to access the "Network and Sharing Center" o
by looking at the network icon in your taskbar. If you cant get into th
network center or if the network icon has a red X and youre sure you ar
connected to something, then you have a WMI problem.

For users with Windows Vista Ultimate or Business editions
(Credit goes to blueshot from MS forums
For users with the Home editions of Vista
    (Credit goes to SWAndersen
Go to the command prompt (hit run and type in cmd.exe
    and type this in

net localgroup Administrators /add Local Servic

then you can type this in

    net localgroup Administrator

and if LOCAL NT AUTHORITY/SERVICE is listed, then it worked. Now g

Adding a local service to admins isn't really that great of an idea

    But it helps...............
It has worked with everyone else on the internet..

    1. Really, everyone else on the Internet

    2. Creating a security hole as a work around isn't really a solution

    Alright dude, ur wish....
But let me remind everyone else...
This method has worked for EVERYONE who has tried it b4, and they are
having NO problems.... They've reported NO such thing as security holes
    or things like that..
    Security hole or not...
if u have a good antivirus or firewall, it's good enough...

Everyone who "doesn't want to take the risk" can live with
    "hl2.exe has stopped working"....
    Like it or not...

    I'm just trying to help...

He originally posted some fix for HL2.

Guess not everyone realizes this is MS Usenet, lots of Interweb Sitez
copy the group onto web forums.

Actually his suggestion to open a hole in your network security wasn't
that great of a suggestion. It may fix the problem, but could cause
others. Would be better to ask Valve support for assistance, just to
double-check and see if that's the only solution.

Besides, he types you as "u" and your as "ur" (which is hallarious,
because "ur" isn't your, it's actually an abbreviation of "you're", so
he's saying "you are wish...." in a literal sense of the word), do you
really want to take any advice from him without doing a bit of your own
    research first?

(Likewise, I'd hope no one here takes any of my advice blindly without

Ah, thanks Andy. Yes, that's a heck of a step just to get a game running.
Checking with Valve is better advice.

Great line, "Security hole or not..."!!

    My go
"you" (i'm not using 'u') people here are peer torture..
all i wanted to do was provide a little help
but no... i get interrogated for no reason..
    ruthless people..
No wonder this place has such few members..
I'm sorry... I don't think i have enough credit to help here.
I'm sorry if my help made you people angry..
I'm sorry for using 'u' instead of You and 'ur'... that's my way o

There... now don't go "double-checking" or "researching" for m
Other forums provide me with comfort or are just satisfied with m
help, but it's not the same here... I get insulted and spat at instea
just for saying "ur" or "u"..
This is probably my last post in, so good bye..
I hope u torturers can continue torturing others and make thi
beautiful looking forum a deserted hell..

    Olórin Guest

My, you're sensitive! "Torture", "ruthless people", "insulted", "spat at"!
And nobody was interrogating you - perhaps you don't know what that actually
means. Any more than I know what "peer torture" is (if it's a different
    thing from "pure torture"...).

The "ur" comment was all in a paragraph starting "Besides". Andy's main
point, and mine, was in his previous paragraph commenting on your advice to
"take the risk" by reducing system security and potentially causing other
problems just to get a game to work, and he recommended the OP seek other
    solutions from Valve support.

If you DO ever return to Deserted Hell, please don't keep snipping out a
thread's history from your posts (like you just did again despite being
asked not to); it helps keep continuity. Meanwhile, good luck with the
comfort you obtain from your other forums.

I've always considered myself a bit of a masochist.

I don't know what forum you're using, but you should tell the admin that
your replies aren't appearing under the correct header.

It should be I'm, not "i'm". "pure", not "peer". "all" should be
capitalized. Also, it's not necessary to use 3 periods, usually 1 will

God, I could go on forever.

Other forums aren't Usenet (even if it is a Microsoft offshoot service),
we hold people to a higher standard here. How you present your arguement
goes a long way to establishing credibility, If you take the time to
post your thoughts clearly and concisely, people will take you more
seriously. Well, more people will take you more seriously.

Also, I am not affiliated with, this is a USENET newsgroup
that COPIES into a "forum". Any newsreader can access this
group. Here are some links, educate yourself, there is life on this net
    outside of the Interweb. (

Welcome to Internet Life OUTSIDE a web browser.

P.s.- You're so easy. Take a breath, don't let every little thing get to
you or you are gonna croak before you hit 16. Take a typing course or
play more MMOs. I learned to touch type playing EverQuest. Shift key is
a great thing, and you don't have to press Enter except at the end of a
    paragraph or thought.

Wow, much more eloquent than anything I could of ever come up with.

I usually trim out text from replies, in a Usenet Newsgroup you are
advised to trim your quote, assuming you are actually responding to the
correct thread or post in the thread.

Problem is a lot of "Vista Forums" copy groups into forums and everyone
thinks they are local forums and not GLOBAL beyond the borders of that
Great article on quoting in Usenet posts. I think there should be some
requirement in forums to state that the posts that go into this group go
    beyond their boundries.
I got the above link from this link, talks about Netiquette and why
posting at the END of a reply is better than posting your response at the
top. (Thank you for that, Microsoft. Idiots.)

The guy was a douche anyways. (seeing if he's still around, hehe)

Back on topic, and for the record, my 3 Vista Machines run Half-Life
games without crashing, no workarounds necessary. Drivers, BIOS Updates,
and TLC are better suggestions than "Make a huge hole in your network
    security, and it'll never crash."
