Error installing (KB 921896)

    Dr. George Guest

I recently successfully upgraded to Win Vista from Win XP. I have an HP
Media Center computer. I am having my first big Vista probelm. Win Vista
Update notified me that KB 921896 needed to be downloaded and installed. It
appears to download and start to install. Sudddenly it stops and I get an
error code 2B22 or 2B26. I spent 3 hours with MS Online Tech Chat India.
There was no explanation of the error codes. The tech remotely installed KB
921896 from the MS download page. I rebooted and still couldn't download the
Win Vista Update item. I was told that MS SLQ Server 2005 is incompatible
with Vista. What am I supposed to do? I cannot use Outlook Business
Contacts 2007. I think the MS Accounting 2007 needs SQL too. My Hotfix data
    is below. Thanks!

What password? What account? ...when there is only one administrator
    account on the computer?

    Thanks!

Steve... I have the exact same issue with ACT7... It appears that the
Windows Update program needs the authentic process for logging to the
SLServer instance to be in the "Windows Authentication" mode instead of
"Mixed Authentication" mode which is the ACT7 default. Unfortuantely, ACT7
insulates the user from having easy access to change this authentication
process. Thus, Windows Update looks to login to SQLServer using an
authentication process that is not valid with the way that ACT7 has setup the
SQLServer instance. I do not know how to get around this... but this is the
key to the problem... I am hoping Microsoft or ACT (not helpful) can advise
as to how to temporarily active SQLServer to the "Widows Authentication" mode.

Please note that ACT7 users are setup to use the "Local System" built in
account of SQLServer 2005 Express... which normally does not have a password
required (or revealed).... Clearly the Windows Update process is not able to
logon (fails) with this default account. Should I try to logon by some sort
of other process (not sure how to do this)... There are options to use other
sorts of account types.... but it is unclear how to set them up.

I have downloaded the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack
2 (KB 921896) but have not been able to install it and have now decided I do
not need the update and want to remove the download and all its related files
from my computer, can you advise on how to do this?

I'm also seeing this problem with the error code 2B22. This is on a fresh
    Vista install.

"Get Help" is not particularly helpful -- but it did at least get me to the
newsgroups (though not the Windows Update newsgroup, which would've been more
    helpful as a redirect).

My summary.txt is as follows. I will try the service start trick mentioned
elsewhere in this thread and report back.

I see the service "SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS)" in my Services, pre-set to
    "Automatic".

When I try to start the service manually, I get the following error. No idea
where to go from here. Any help appreciated -- thanks!

Is there any more help on this issue yet? I have infomed ACT Support and
their answer was that the SQL Server update is "not critical" and not to
worry about it for now and to disable the update for SP2 in Microsoft Update.
I have done that now... but that does not resolve the problem.

The core issue is listed below.... I have tried a manual start or an
automatics start for the SQL(ACT7) instance and each time the installation
fails with the same message. Can you provide help/guidance on the user
authentication issue? SQL Server Express 2005 is just bundled with ACT7...
there are no instructions on how to manage any issues with the SQL Server
    login process. Thank you

Have you received any assistance/answers from Microsoft related to this
problem?.... I have not seen any sort of response to this inquiry for 2
weeks.... HELP! I have disabled Microsoft update... but this does not solve
    the problem.

Hi Peter, I have the same problem as the others and have tried to solve it
over the last 2 weeks. My PC automatically downloaded and installed MS SQL
Server 2005 Express Edition SP2 on 14 occasions. 2 failures
and 12 successfully . I also downloaded the program from microsoft and
installed it manually. As on the Auto updates and Downloaded prog I got the
message " installation successful". Next day and the day after that, etc
etc I keep getting the same message that I need to download and install MS
SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2.
I tried to hide the update on Microsoft updates but was reminded by Win
Live Onecare that I need to restore hidden update, and the hidden update was,
you guessed it MS SQL ********SP2
As per your other answers on this subject, I have inclosed the Logs. I have
posted 2 logs which cover Failure and Success.

    Peter

I have the same problem. I checked the services and the SQL server is on
"automatic". If I start the SQL service manually, it fails by saying:

Windows could not start the SQL server (MSSMLBIZ) on Local Computer. For
more information, review the System Event Log. If this ia a non Microsoft
service, contact the servie vendor, adn refer to service-specific error code
    3417.

After the failing installation of SQL update 2 package the hotfix
    information is:

I too am having trouble with the SQL9Express update KB 921896. I get error
code 1612 and "The installation source for this product is not available.
Verify that the source ixists and that you can access it. I also have Act
2007 installed and run Windows XP. I have worked with the Windows Update
support group and after great effort marked the problem unreasolved and moved
on suggesting this discussion group. Here is my log posting with hope that a
solution will be found as it is very annoying to have this update keep
showing up along with the security risk implied by the failure. Currently my
system is on the 89th attempt at installation. All logs pretty much read the
same over a three month period.

    Thanks for any help. Jim

    Mr. Saddow -

I was having a similar issue trying to install the update that is the
subject of this thread. It appeared that my issue arose from a service called
SQL Server (MSSMLBIZ). I looked at the Summary.txt log you've mentioned with
others, and noted that this service couldn't be started. Tried starting it
manually several times, but to no avail. Each time I tried I received a
message saying the service started and stopped, and that sometimes services
stopped immediately when nothing was using them.

By reading all the threads pertaining to this update issue I was able to
piece together enough to figure ot what I needed to do, and to then make it
happen. Your responses were pretty helpful, so thanks.

I'm curious, though - do I really need this service? I don't use small
business manager - I installed it by mistake when I installed Office 2003.
Will SQL Server (MSSMLBIZ) continue to be an issue for future updates for SQL
Express? Would I be better served to simply remove Small Business manager, or
do I have to worry about some other issue popping up to bite me in the ass?

For your reference - the summary log file from the last unsuccessful
installation attempt, followed by the successful install. Thanks again for
    your good work!

  18. Hi Humanist,
I too am getting an error code when trying to install KB 921896. I've read
through the threat and tried everything suggested, but it's still not
working. I'm so frustrated, wasted so much time that I'm more interested in
just leaving it and see what happens. Something's not working. Any ideas?
    Thanks.

I, too, am having the same installation failure for SQL Server 2005, which
has been trying to install for some time. I've tried downloading the free
standing file, which ends up failing in the same way, despite installing as
administrator. If it's important to have this, please help. The latest log
    file is here . . .
