Error joining domain "the specified user already exists"

Discussion in 'Windows Server' started by Martin T Williams, Feb 19, 2006.

  1. Hello all,

I have a 2003 AD domain. I have had to rebuild the main DC. Before I did
this, I transfered all the FSMO roles on to a windows 2000 server. When I now
try to add the 2003 server to the domain as an additional domain controller
(via dcpromo) i get the error "the specified user already exists" while
trying to add the server as a DC for an existing domain.

I am using an account which is a domain admin to join the DC to the domain

    Any ideas?

    Martin

  2. Does the computer account (name) already exist on the domain? You probably
need to remove the old computer account before adding the new.

    Regards,
    Erik

  3. Yes, that was the case. I didnt DCPROMO the DC before rebuilding it. School
boy error. I had to use ADSIedit to remove the DC from the Domain Controllers
    OU.

    Thanks for your help.
