i have the same problem and i think it is because of our
computers not being able to connect to 'download.microsoft.com'.

next question is of course: why are our computers no longer able
    to connect to that site?

was that site kicked out of the dns-tables of the dns-servers of
our provider? did some program a change to the hosts-file or the
restricted zone internet settings of our computers?

does anyone know the ip-address of 'download.microsoft.com'?

  3. Hi

You receive an "Error 0x80072EE2" or "Initialization Error 0x80072F76"
error message when you try to use Windows Update
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=836941

If you have Sygate firewall or something similar, this thread
    may be relevant:
    http://groups.google.com/groups?threadm=

If nothing of the above works:

Rename (or just delete) the SoftwareDistribution folder and
    see if it helps.

You can use the procedure described here:

    http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer/showarticle.aspx?articleid=21&ln=en

Note that a side effect of renaming or deleting the SoftwareDistribution
folder is that you lose your WU v5 History listing (not critical).

(later on, you can just delete the renamed SoftwareDistribution
    folder)
