  6. Try to execute these commands one by one in the CMD (Start -> Run -> cmd -> ok)

    net stop wuauserv
    regsvr32 wuapi.dll
    regsvr32 wups.dll
    regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
    regsvr32 wucltui.dll
    regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
    regsvr32 qmgr.dll
    regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
    net start wuauserv
    exit

this solved the problem for me

    Hello Mr. Macleod,

I followed the steps which you gave as a solution for Shiela's issue and was
    able to resolve my issue.

Thanks a lot for helping us resolve these trivial issues which bug us a lot
    at times.

    Regards,
    Anshul

after inputting the 2nd section of your advice...it worked...
but later the same thing happened again
i looked in the windows folder and the software distribution folder has
    reappeared
is there a way to stop this happening

    Hi Guys.

I also have the same issue on my Compaq laptop, but even though I followed
the steps detailed, the solution has apparently made no change to the
    situation.
I STILL get the same error code...... :-((
    Anything else I can try?

    TIA,

    Mark
