I have Mc Afee Installed in my computer. Once I Installed the SP2 update my
windows update says that [Error number: 0x80072EFD] has occured and I cannot
search for any updates. I have gone thru the suggestions namely 1,2 and 3 as
posted for others but couldnt make it thru this error. If anyone has any
ideas give it to me as i want to update my computer.

This just happened to me also, today. I've operated XPSP2 since Tue, 8 Aug, and have not had this problem until now. It may be due to some adjustments on the site today. But will be monitoring this thread for options:) When scanning for updates, it stops and gives the following error message:
"Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page.

    Error number: 0x80072EFD"

I too have gone through the suggested steps. I have NIS 2003 installed.

None of the suggestions worked, but after reading Phil Sweet's comments, I disabled NIS 2003, and it now works!
Since upgrading to SP2 I have been to the windows update site every day and it worked, with NIS enabled. Today it stopped working with NIS 2003 enabled. NIS has been updated twice since adding SP2, so something in the update may have changed in it, to not allow access. What program do I need to add to NIS to allow access?

  4. Hi

Open TCP/IP 443 in both directions for this process:

    %windir%\system32\svchost.exe

I too have had the same problem with this Windows Update upgrade! Why the
heck do MS change things? I'm running Norton Internet Security Professional
2003, and tried to amend to accept the suggested settings, but still no joy.
I've been at this for over an hour and a half and completely cheesed off.
Has anyone else had a straight answer from MS about what they've changed in
    the Update update?!?!

I don't know if this will be of help but Norton have a SP2 Support page
    http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/sp2/asa.html

A quote from one of their FAQs:
    Norton Firewall/Norton Internet Security
Installing Service Pack 2 will not affect Norton Personal Firewall or Norton
Internet Security. The Windows Security Center will be aware that you have
one of these products installed, but it will not be able to determine their
working status due to Symantec's tamper-protection technology.

  7. I have found that the problem is cause by the 'Firewall' blocking access to
the 'Microsoft Generic Host Process for WIN32 Services' (svchost) if you
'Permit all' for this programme in your Firewall all works fine.

    ..... I am using NIS2004

  8. Hi

My own knowledge of ports vs. security isn't very good either, but like
any open port, this represents a potentially security hole, but how big
    I don't know.
