I too received notice of an automatic update, which I ran, and then rebooted
my computer. The windows update notification reappeared, so this time I
check Custom to see what the update was. It had to do with MS Word 2002, as
weell, as other users have posted.

I said okay install, which it dupposedly did, and I rebooted once more.
Later the same day, I went to Windows Update to see what updates I have
    alreay installed.

    then received the error message:

    [Error number: 0x8024400D]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.

Which then said to go to various other websites, including neswgroups, and
the online tech supoort, which is where i"m going nxt!

Try this reported fix: Using Internet Explorer, visit V6 of Windows Update. This will get all
    your W U controls updated to V6.
