  1. Update begins, but does not finish, the search for updates. This message
came with instructions to start services.msc and to set the properties of
BITS to "automatic" and "started". They were already set that way. I have
since rebooted. Update is still broken.

I too get this error, I do not want auto updates enabled on this system but
even enabling them does not stop this error from occuring. I installed SP2
from the large 272 MB download for networks since I have many systems that I
take care of. Up until today Windows Update worked fine on this computer and
I just checked it on three other PC's and it works fine on every one. Anyone
    have any ideas?

  3. This was solved for me by following Lucy's suggestion in the response to
Larry's query dated 5/9/2004. Her first suggestion worked. I started
automatic update and I set BITS to manual ( the opposite of the Microsoft
message, which says to set it to automatic). I don't know which step of the
two did it, but update now works.
