Worked for me also! Many thanks, you've solved a problem I've had for around
a year in about 30 seconds!

I also have this error due to malware called "vundo" that infected my pc.
I tried all what was suggested from the thread running regsvr32.exe on
different dll. It did not work, till somewhere along in the thread I saw a
suggestion to go to superantispware.com and download superantispyware
software. It is free. I did that and run and behold my problem is fix. I can
do automatic update now from microsoft.
I have another problem now. One of the file quarantine was by the software
was "rxsinevf.dll". Every time I boot my system I got error in loading as it
cannot find it on my windows/system32. I just ignore it. I can restore the
file but I am worried it might be infected. I don't know what this rxsinevf
    dll function is.

Make sure that you have automatic updates turned on.

Make sure that the Remote Procedure Call Locator is not disabled:
Click Start, select Run and type in:
    services.msc
Locate " Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator".
If it is disabled, then right click on it, go to 'Properties', change to 'manual' and
    Apply.
    Try Windows Update Again

    Otherwise see -
You may receive an error message that contains the "0x8DDD0018" code or the "0x80246008"
code when you try to download updates from the Microsoft Windows Update Web site or from
    the Microsoft Update Web site

For which OS? This thread is so old that some of the OS that you
might be using weren't even built then! If you need more help than
the hints you can find in all the existing threads about this code,
please start your own thread with your own details.
