Hello. Windows Defender is unable to check for updates to its definitions,
even though Windows Update is set to update automatically. Might you have any
ideas what can be done to rectify this situation? Thank you in advance for
    any help you can offer.

  3. Go here: http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/
Under ' Latest Versions ' in the right frame, click the Windows Defender
    link for ' 32bit Definitions '
[NOTE: IF the system is 64bit, then click that link]
    Save the file
Close the browser and any other open programs
Run mpas-fe.exe to install the latest definitions for Defender

unable to write to the log file

Could be a misconfigured firewall, interference from antivirus/security
software, damaged update software controls, or the log *might* be corrupted.

To eliminate the possibility of the log being corrupted, locate the
WindowsUpdate.log in the WINDOWS directory [[folder]
*Right* click it and choose Properties
    What shows for ' Size ' ?

Please copy and paste the last 50 or so lines of the log into your reply.

Which antivirus program/security suite is installed ?

Suggest you download and install the latest version of the Windows
    Update Agent:
    http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

Save it, do NOT run it. When the download is complete close the browser.
    Now run WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

IF a message appears stating that the Update Agent is already installed,
then go to Start > Run > click the Browse button
Navigate to where WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe was saved and click once
    on it
    Click the Open button
In the Open: line, click once on WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe
It should now be highlighted in blue
Click once after the last quotation mark "
Push the Space Bar on the keyboard and enter /wuforce
The entry should now look like this

    "C:\<locationoffile>\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" /wuforce

Note the space after the last quotation mark and the /

    Click OK or press Enter

Now try to access the Windows Update site
