Clear out your temporary internet files.

    Rename the softwaredistribution folder:

    Stop the Automatic Updates service

    Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
    Click OK.
    Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
    Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

    Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type %windir%\
    Click OK.
Locate and rename the folder softwaredistribution to softwaredistribitonold
    Close the window.

    Start the Automatic Updates service
    Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
    Click OK.
    Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
    Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

You will lose your history but not important.

    Try WU again.

Sorry, the response I gave earlier was for WinXP, perhaps you should clear
the contents of your temporary Windows Update folder
C:\WUTemp (or copy everyting to another location if you're not sure).

I have the same problem with this error number. I tried the solution below
and the error still happens. What else can be done?

  6. Some days I'm easily confused, I noticed the win98user signature and then
    assumed he was using 98?
