In our enviroment we have 4 DC's and 2 mail servers (we are in the middle of
a migration and the old one will be soon removed), Last week we had our brand
new mailserver have some critical hardware failures and spent a long time
rebuilding it from scratch. Everything seems to be going along fine except
in Active Directory (we are using exchange 2003 on the new server) when i try
to do anything like add new user or reset password i get this error:
WINDOWS CANNOT COMPLETE THE PASSWORD CHANGE FOR <USER> BECAUSE: THE SYSTEM
    CANNOT FIND THE FILE SPECIFIED.

If i go and make the changes on any other server with AD then i can make the
change. Any suggestions would be appreiciated

  2. First things to do then are check the event logs. Assuming this server is a
DC, run DCDIAG against it too. If the server was previously a DC, have you
cleaned up the metadata, FRS objects and DNS records? If not, you need to
do that - see kb216498 for instructions on how to do this.

Cross ref your event logs with www.eventid.net. Post back here with any
    questions, events, errors, etc.

Turns out that the admin account we use to log in became currupt in the
hardware failure. Renaming the ntuser.dat file and then replacing it with a
copy of the file from the default user account.
