Event ID 3150 W2K3 new setup

I have created a new W2K3 AD and installed DNS on the primary server. I then
followed KB816518 to create the secondary name server. There were no Reverse
Lookup Zones so the step there was not duplicated. I also have a W2K AD
setup and running correctly so I basically followed the directions and
checked against the W2K setup and all appeared well.
    Two issues though:
I run nslookup from the Primary and Clients and get resolution. I run it
from the Secondary and get a timeout although the name is eventually
supplied. I have clean Event viewers with one exception. The Secondary DNS
DC returns the following in the Application event every 8 hours or so:

    Event ID 3150 Source DNS

The Description for Event ID (3150) in Source (DNS) cannot be found. The
local computer may not have the necessary registry information or DLL files
to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the
/AUXSOURCE=flag to retrieve this description. See Help and Support for
details. The following information is part of the event: 49 mydomain.com,
mydomain.com.DNS. (Mydomain.com name changed to protect the innocent).

This is an informational event and research shows that it may be a "no
action required" type that just signifies that information is being written
but I cannot confirm with what is given. My feeling, of course, is that the
lack of resolution from this machine and this are related but I can find
nothing that ties the two. My Primary DNS server's Preferred DNS IP setting
points to itself and the Secondary points to the Primary as do the clients.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.....thanks in advance.

  2. In
Is the zone on the primary stored in Active Directory?
Is the Secondary also on a DC?
This will not work, you cannot have DCs with AD integrated zones on one and
Secondary on the other. Remove the secondary zones and force a replication
cycle. The AD zones will replicate to all DCs in the domain with DNS
installed. Win2k3 also has other replication option not available in Win2k,
Win2k3 can replicate to all Domain Controllers or all DNS servers in the
    forest running Win2k3.

    Yes and yes.
Please give me details on how to implement what you suggest (or where I can
    find them).
Was using the KB not the correct procedure?
Where do you set the replication options?

    Thanks,
    Monty

I did in my previous post. See this:
Not for zones stored Active Directory.
IIRC, it is on the General tab of the zone properties.

Do I allow or disalow Zone transfers?

  6. In
You can disallow zone transfers since zone transfers are securely done
    through AD replication.

Using the DNS management console, can you see if the zones have replicated
    to the second DC?

Let me be really specific about the nslookup results...

    nslookup test
    DNS request timed out.
    Timeout was 2 seconds.
***Can't find server name for address (Primary DNS Server IP is there):
    Timed out
    Server: Unknown
Address (Supplies correct IP for Primary DNS server here)

    Name: test.mydomain.com
Address: (Supplies correct IP for test here).

Create a PTR record for this IP and this will go away.

I'm getting confused here...PTR would indicate a Reverse Zone and I find
conflicting information on whether that is required in W2K3. I do not have
one in my current (operational) W2K AD and I get resolution on nslookup
correctly. Please help straighten me out.

Went ahead and created Reverse Zone and PTR record and am still getting
error but has now changed to Non-existent domain. I assume this indicates a
Forward Lookup Zone issue as timeout is Reverse Zone related. Forward Zone
was created and propogated as per AD instructions. No Event Viewer errors,
Client sees AD and works but has same nslookup error, PCD seems to be
working well. Nslookup runs correctly from PDC. All machines pingable by IP
    or Hostname. Any ideas?

  14. In
Reverse lookup zones are not required for Win2k3, though not having one will
cause 40960 and 40961 events because without one Windows will try to
register PTR records at the Internet Blackhole server prisoner.iana.org.
Nslookup on the other hand will attempt a reverse lookup on the IP address
of the DNS server it uses. Which is why many will recommend you stop using
nslookup. Personally, I think you can use it or not since it comes with
Windows, but there are better DNS tools to use that don't make unnecessary
    queries.

  15. In
If you created a reverse lookup zone and you are getting Non-existent
domain at nslookup startup, you either improperly named the zone or PTR
    record.
