Event ID 58: Shadow copies for volume removed

Discussion in 'Windows Server' started by Tigran (Mr. T), Jul 10, 2006.

  1. We have Windows 2003 SP1 server and have experienced a rather strange
    behavior by VSS.

Our storage solution takes a snapshot of the destination volume after we
finish a data transfer and places it on the same destination volume. We
started getting informational Event ID 58 -

The oldest shadow copy of volume R: was deleted to keep the total number of
shadow copies of volume R: below a limit.

A quick glance at the number of shadow copies reported by Perfmon showed 512
copies - thus, based on VSS model, the oldest copy was removed. All is
    correct.

What is puzzling is that VSSADMIN LIST SHADOWS only lists 236 shadow copies.

Does anyone know anything about this? We are relying on reading the
VSSADMIN data and have no idea that the oldest shadow copy was removed by VSS.
