exchange information store won't mount URGENT HELP GREATLY APPRECIATED

Discussion in 'Windows Small Business Server' started by Laurin Beckhusen, Oct 20, 2007.

  1. Ok this all started today when I noticed that the server I am responsible
for had shutdown unexpectedly. (windows sbs 2003 up to date with service
packs and critical updates) I rebooted and everything was fine, but I
noticed the nightly backup wasn't run. So I decided to do a backup of the
system state and exchange store ( ntbackup.exe through "standard management"
    GUI ).

During the verify stage the server locked up to a black screen and would not
respond. I tried connecting in remotely, but to no avail. All of the users
docs were still active ( my docs and desktop are redirected to the server),
but after about 10 minutes, everyone lost connection to the server. So I
force the server to restart, and run a check disk , which reports everything
healthy ( btw it's a raid array, but both drives are healthy and array is
    running normal )

After the server booted up I noticed that exchange was unable to mount the
store. The error message at start up was:

I attempted to recover from Wednesday night's backup.

    I followed the article here:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124040.aspx

I stopped exchange related services, and made a copy of mbdata to the
desktop. I started exchange services, and began restore (ntbackup.exe).
Restore was successfull (I made sure I checked the box to allow the db to be
overwritten, and "last restore set" options.

Replay started and then the following error:

I tried restoring again, this time not checking the option for "last restore

I tried running eseutil /cc on the restored temp folder c:\temp & get the
    same error warning.

So, Short of exporting everyones local cached version and connecting them to
pop3 (we use and outside host for reasons like this ), what can I do to get
the information store mounted correctly from a backuped version.

    Please help!

I suggest it may be best to call CSS since this is an urgent situation and
you're unlikely to get enough timely help over the weekend in this newsgroup
    to solve the Exchange problems.

  3. Not to mention you could have some hardware problems here. Healthy
    servers don't shut down unexpectedly.

  4. Hi Laurin,

Thanks for posting in our newsgroup.

I noticed before the problem occurred, you experienced unexpected shut
down, blank screen and losing disconnection, the problem may be more
complex. Although the Exchange Server doesn't work and your business is
affected, a suggestion is to call CSS who will provide you more rapid and
efficient support. Thanks for your understanding.

If you'd like to continue the troubleshooting steps in our newsgroup, I'd
like to give you the following suggestions:

Based on my research, Event ID 477, 457 and 454 occurs if a transaction log
file is corrupted. Please take the following steps to see if the problem
    can be resolved.

Step 1: Please run the following commands to check if the store was clean
    shut down.

    cd C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\bin

    eseutil /mh c:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA\priv1.edb

    eseutil /mh c:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA\pub1.edb

In the output results, locate the output line that is labeled "State." If
the database state is consistent, you will see "State: Clean Shutdown." If
the database is inconsistent, you will see "State: Dirty Shutdown."

If the databases are consistent, move all the log files out of the folder
where your database files are located, and then mount the stores. The
folder where your database files are located is typically the
Exchsrvr\Mdbdata folder. As with any situation where a log file has been
corrupted, some data loss will occur.

Step 2: If the databases are inconsistent, you can try to perform a soft
recovery of the files. Please run the following command in the folder where
the database and the log files are located:

    "C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Bin\Eseutil" /r E00

Important: To perform a soft recovery, you must stop the Microsoft Exchange
    Information Store service.

Step 3: if the database remains in an inconsistent state, you can try to
repair your databases by using the eseutil /p command.

  5. From customer's e-mail:

    Thank you for the reply.

The DB was in an inconsistent state. I ended up moving all the files out of
the mbdata folder, and restoring from backup.

Upon looking at the database and log files, apparently I was missing a log
file, and the checksum was off ( most likely due to the server restart ).

If you would like I could send you the errors I was getting.

The only issue I have left to clean up is: I restored the backup from
Wednesday night. The clients outlook (cached mode) had already downloaded
email that was not in the Wednesday backup. Now the clients have email in
outlook, that they are unable to access in OWA.

Would you still like me to generate the cab file for you as well?

    Cheers,

  6. Hi Laurin,

    Thanks for your reply.

After restoration from the backup, did you rerun the "eseutil/mh" command?
Please give me the screen shot of the output and the MPS Report for deep
    research.

You have new e-mails newer than the Wednesday backup, a suggestion is to
export the e-mails to pst file. After the problem is resolved and the store
can be mounted, we can import the files to Exchange again. In this way you
    will not lose new e-mails.

    Event Category: General
    Event ID: 9523
    Date: 10/23/2007
    Time: 12:59:52 AM
    User: N/A
    Computer: SERVER
    Description:
The Microsoft Exchange Database "First Storage Group\Mailbox Store
    (SERVER)" has been started.

    For more information, click http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp.

It seems the Mailbox store is still mounted. I need to double confirm this
with you . The "eseutil /mh" command can only be run when the store is
dismounted. You can check by the following steps:

    To dismount the Mailbox Store.

    1. Open Exchange Server Management.
    2. Go to Domain(Exchange)\Servers\ServerName\First Storage Group\Mailbox
    Store.
    3. Right-click Mailbox Store, and then click Dismount Store.

If the mailbox store is dismounted already, please check the following
steps to see if you can run the "eseutil /mh" command.

Step 1: Please make sure the system has full permission on the Database.
Check the NTFS permission on the c:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA folder.

Authenticated Users: Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read
    CREATOR OWNER:
Server Operators: Modify, Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read, Write
    SYSTEM: Full Control

Step 2: Please make a clean boot to make sure the problem is not caused
    third party software:

    1. Click Start->Run...->type msconfig and press Enter.
    2. Click Services tab and select Hide All Microsoft Services and Disable
    All third party Services.
    3. Click Startup tab and Disable All startup items.
    4. Click OK and choose Restart.
    5. After reboot, check whether the problem still occurs.
    6. If there are no more problems, please use the above steps to enable
services and startup items one by one in order to figure out the root cause
    of this issue.

Step 3: Please stop the Information Store and SMTP service, try again.

    1. Run the service.msc command.
    2. Double click Microsoft Exchange Information Store, set the startup type
    to Manual.
    3. Double click Simple Mail Transfer Protocol(SMTP), set the startup type
    to Manual.
    4. Click OK.
    5. Reboot server.
    6. Try again.

Please try the steps and let me know the result.

I am looking forward to hear from you.

    Best regards,

    Robert Li(MSFT)

  9. Hi Laurin,

    Thanks for your reply.

I made research on the your screen shot. I found the Microsoft Exchange
System Attendant was stopped. By default when you stop the Exchange System
Attendant, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service is stopped too.
Please double confirm when you try to mount the mailbox store, the Exchange
System Attendant and Microsoft Exchange Information Store services are
    started.

I also found the database is clean shut down and Log Required:0-0(0x0-0x0).
The shows all the transaction logs are committed to the store. You can
safely delete all the Exx.log file in c:\program files\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA
    folder and try again.

If the problem persists, please help me collect the following information
    to me:

    1. Screen shot of the error message when you mount the mailbox store.

    2. Application log

    1) Click Start -> Run, type EVENTVWR.MSC and click OK.
    2) Right click the Application Event, select Save Log File as, save it to
    ..evt file.
    3) Email me the file

I am looking forward to hear from you.

If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.

  10. From customer's e-mail:

I think you may be a bit confused.

I was able to mount the mailbox store, but it gave me errors.

When I restored from backup hard recovery failed to run. I ran it manually,
and it still gave me an error, but I was able to mount. I restarted all
exchange related services and haven't had any trouble lately.

    Attached is the application log.

    Thanks for the help.

I was worried about running eseutil.exe /p as I heard it can cause data
loss, and I'm not to familiar with it. So far we have had 0 problems with
the exchange server, and all backups have been successful.

Is there a procedure to test restoring the exchange backups ( like mounting
them to the recovery db, to verify the integrity of the data? )

As always thanks for the help!

  12. Hi Laurin,

    Thanks for your reply.

You are right, If you have to repair a database with esetuil /p command,
some data may be lost. Data loss is frequently minimal. If a database is in
a "Dirty Shutdown" state, all existing transaction logs from the checkpoint
forward must be present before you can mount the database again. If these
logs are unavailable or corrupt, you must repair the database with Eseutil
/p to make the database consistent and ready to start.

    More info:

XADM: Exchange 2000 Server Eseutil Command Line Switches
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/317014/

After you restore the backup to Recovery Storage Group, we need to run the
eseutil /mh command to check if the store is clean shut down. If not, you
need to run the eseutil /p command to repair. After this, you need to run
Eseutil/d to defragment the database and Isinteg.exe tool to test
Information Store integrity. You can find more detail information on Page
46, "How to Verify that all Database Files to Be Restored Are in Clean
Shutdown State" of the following white paper:

  14. Hi Laurin,

    Thanks for your reply.

The Recovery Storage Group feature in Microsoft® Exchange Server 2003
allows you to mount a second copy of an Exchange mailbox database on the
same server as the original database, or on any other Exchange server in
the same Exchange administrative group. This can be done while the original
database is running and serving clients. This capability allows you to
recover data from an older backup copy of the database without disturbing
user access to current data. The recovery storage group can also be useful
in various disaster recovery scenarios, most notably the Messaging Dial
    Tone scenario.

You can find the detail steps on using Exchange Server 2003 Recovery
Storage Groups in the following white paper:

Using Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Recovery Storage Groups
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=df144af6-bee5-4b35-
