External hard drives sleep in Vista

I run Vista Business and have two external Lacie drives - 500 gb and 250 bg -
attached via a firewire card. Recently, one or both of the drives seems to go
into a sleep mode and when I try and access a program, they seem to wake up
(one or both starts up and spins - can't tell if it is just one of them or
both). The program then takes a minute or so to react. Often the .exe file
isn't on either of the drives but it sounds as if both drives are being woken
up anyway. I have probably done something to make this happen through
preferences within Vista - but what? Has anyone else had this problem. I have
a Dell XPS quad-core with 4 gigs on memory.
