    Stopping Zone Alarm fixed mine...

Might be just a coincidence but I never experienced this problem until I installed Zone Alarm Pro. My Vista Ultimate machine just locked up with the “Security Options Error” about 5 minutes ago. Totally hosed. Couldn’t bring up task manager, couldn’t shutdown. Couldn’t even connect with a browser. I turned off Zone Alarm and it started working just fine.

Well, I wish I had known this issue was so pervasive before I bought a
new computer with Vista on it.

I'm having the same issue, just started today - just bought my computer
one month ago. Unlike many of you, however, I am not running two
virus/spyware software packages and have not upgraded to SP1... so it
sounds to me like this is a serious issue that Vista has, with no real
    fix.

When I talked to my boyfriend about it, he said "I think that's why
Microsoft is coming out with a new OS... because Vista is screwed".
That doesn't help those of us who don't want/need to invest the money in
    a brand new operating system.

I honestly hope Microsoft is aware of this problem, aware of how
prolific it is, and willing to work on a fix for it - because it's
ridiculous to have a non-working computer less than 4 weeks after you
buy it.... especially when my entire paycheck relies on it operating
    successfully.

Hi, I have quite a simillar problem, although not so serious yet...
usually after letting the computer somehow idle for ten or fifteen
minutes (not precisely verified) it freezes - sometimes even gradually,
like that I can still switch windows and click here and there, but
eventually everything is blocked, including task manager and clock. And
then black screen and the famous message - Failure - security options ->
no other option than cold reboot.

The computer seems to last for a long time as long as I am working, but
on the other hand, it freezed even if I did nothing else after the
reboot than let play some music in Media Player.

In the log there is nothing else than a warning that the system was not
shut down correctly. It started quite suddenly, but restore to a
    previous point didn't change anything.

It's an ASUS F3Sv laptop, one and half years (actually Vista's been
there for a year), HDD is Hitachi I think.

It seems that many people have/had this kind of troubles, however there
was a hell lot of probable causes and solutions. Thx anyone for any
    help...

I have now become a "Victim" of this I have a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Li2727 Laptop which is about 6 months oldand has been fine until now.

My 1st instance occured 2 nights ago while using Internet. The IE froze so I ended it and restarted IE. "Not responding" Tried a couple of times with no joy so rebooted the Laptop which took ages to shut down, (approx 30 mins) I gave up and cold Rebooted. Launched in Safe mode checked the event log and nothing except the IE not responding errors.

I have since restored my system to prior to this initial issue and run Virus scan and adaware with nothing found and it's still the same.

I have noticed an additional error when loading Word "Norton Internet Security has encountered an internal program error" (This is the pre installed 2007 Word in Trial mode) All other Office apps load without issue

I have noticed during this period some automatic updates have been installed so I restored to before this point and got some sort of normality back but could not load IE. Also I found a major delay in boot up was caused by the (again pre-installed) Sidebar. Which I not only disabled but removed from the system - this made no difference.

I have McAfee antivirus and Ad-Aware installed. The laptop came with Norton Antivirus etc. Looking at some of the earlier posts I am thinking that these could be a part of the issue though I stress the Laptop has run without issue in this state for a good 6 months.

Has anyone found/heard a definitive solution on this yet?

EDIT: I tried viewing a couple of the links posted earlier in this forum (eg. forums.techarena.in/operating...htm#post425618 )but they have not worked.

*The same thing happend to me too!!! *My- MainGear pc.tech I worked with
told me to box up my whole unit and mail it to him.- Now I'm wondering
if I need to forward him this feed.... I had used AVG (it came with the
new pc) found a faster loading smaller file anti-virus avast and like
it. Every week I have also did the whole scan thing with windows live.
Then error message Logon has failed to give security option. security
    options failure 0x76210999 0x762F0999 1/0 error status 0xc000000. the
hangups reboots blk screen with mouse curser working, etc.... The thing
that is different on mine is after a vista reinstall (since the system
repair didn't do the trick) my hard drive just disappeared!!! Now I have
    a new pc with nothing:-(
