Fax Server Role fails to create shared fax printer

I added the fax server (and print server) roles to a SBS 2008 server. When I
attempt to configure the fax service through the SBS Console, it shows the
modem correctly for sending and receiving, but fails to initialize the
service (the last step of the configuration wizard). The FaxCW.log shows
that there is an error during the "ShareFaxPrinter" step, but I am unable to
find any information on this error. The Server Manager shows the service is
running and appears to be configured correctly (modem show up under devices,
etc.). When I attempt to open the Windows Fax Client it asks me to connect
to a local fax modem, or to a server. When I try either, it throws a generic
error and doesn't allow me to configure a local or server fax.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!!

Below is a copy of the failed portion of the FaxCW.log:

  2. Hi,

    Thanks for your post.

From the error message in the FaxCW.log:

"[38604] 090609.122920.9383: AdminTME: Win32Exception caught in sharing the fax printer: System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: ShareFaxPrinter - OpenPrinter() failed --->
System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: The printer name is invalid "

It seems the Fax modem/printer has some problems. Have you tried uninstall and install the fax modem?
    1. Please use Administrator account and open the "Phone and Modem Options" in the Control Panel to remove and reinstall the fax modem and also check the advanced properties of the modem.

Is it compatible with 64bit version SBS 2008 server or installed 64bit modem driver?
    2. Please make sure the modem support 64bit Windows 2008 server and has compatible driver installed.

Have you tried "Repair the Fax Service" or "Uninstall the Fax Service" SBS Device console?
    3. If the issue persists, please try to use "Repair the Fax Service" or "Uninstall the Fax Service" to see if there is any change there.

Hope this helps. Also, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Thank you for your post Robbin,

I have tried the first option you suggested, in addition to installing a
external USRobitics faxmodem with proper 64bit drivers. I still received
the same response. I have not tried the repair or reinstall options as of
yet. I have been called away to another clients, but expect to be able to
try this tomorrow. Do you happen to know if either the repair or reinstall
options are going to require a reboot?

    Thanks for your assistance,

    -Geoff

  4. Hi Geoff,

    Thanks for your reply.

Please take your time to try the steps and let us know the results.

By default, the Uninstall Fax process will need a reboot but you can click NO to cancel it if you want.

    Thanks.

Ok, I have reinstalled the Fax Server role and rebooted the server. I am
still getting the same error as before. I guess that I will be opening a
ticket with Microsoft to look into this issue.

I will report back if they are able to figure out what is happening.
