File copy operations and server performance problems?

I have seen this problem on may hardware combinations:

When I copy large (> 5GB) Virtual Machine images from one disk to another on
a Windows Server 2003 machine (x64 with 4GB RAM), the machine will get into
serious performance problems. Remote desktop hangs and / or gets extremely
sluggish. Virtual machines running is not responding etc. Ping responds ok
during the copy. In performance monitor, I can see that Pages / sec is going
    over the roof.

This is a very serious problem.

Anyone else seen this or know how to fix this?

  2. Not too sure but, please make sure that your pagefile is located on another
physical hard disk (instead of the system disk)...

I have now disabled the pagefile (set to 0).

It makes no difference at all.

Why should a disk to disk copy cause paging I/O to a third disk?

That doesn't seem to be an efficient way to copy a file...

I have also tried to set a 6GB page file on another drive and the server
still gets into a non-responsive state when copying large files around.

This problem seems to be most visible when copying the large file to the
same physical disk which is holding the OS partition.

  7. Hmm...

    IDE/SATA/RAID?

How many freespace on the disk? Did you do any defragment on the virtual
file or the hdd? (Please try doing a defragment) and copy again.

Also when did you start to have this issue?

If you have Exchange 2003 you could try using Eseutil to copy the file. It
bypasses the disk cache and generally will go MUCH faster on large file
copies. I've seen 3-6 times speed improvement depending on the size of the
file and what the source and destination are. On a 200 GB file over the
    network, I saw a 3.5 X speed increase (from 17 MB/sec to 60 MB/sec).

Another utility to try would be Total Commander. It has an option to bypass
the disk cache on copies, but I haven't tried it.

    Thanks,

    Stephen
