Most people will need to open .doc or .docx files created by Microsoft Word, and of course the easiest way to do this would be to buy the software package. However, if you just need to read files but rarely need to create your own then it does not justify the expense of the software.

Microsoft have therefore provided free software so that users can view Word documents created by others, without needing the Microsoft Word software. Of course, the restriction is that you cannot edit these files.
