gpresult "hangs" at Getting the domain information...

Discussion in 'Windows Server' started by Ryan Whitaker, Sep 16, 2005.

  1. I am having issues with gpresult hanging at "Getting the domain
information..." for 10-15 minutes a 2003 child domain. This only occurs on XP
and 2003 machines. Gpresult does eventually complete without giving any
errors, but I know its not supposed to take that long.

    Background:
We recently upgraded from Server 2000 to 2003 (running SP1). Do to issues
with with original child domain, we created a new seperate 2003 domain and
migrated the only User and Computer objects over, everything else was setup
from scratch. During the migrations I had to setup an external trust between
the old and new child domains (even though they were in the same AD forest)
in order to get the account objects to migrate correctly. We have since
manually removed the old domain from AD using ndtsutil (the last DC could not
be removed through dcpromo) though I still sometimes find unresolved SIDs
from the old domain on various ACLs (For instance, on the sites containers
that used to contain the original domain, I manually removed the broken sids
from here). I have run dcdiag and find no errors, and as far as I can see
everything in DNS is fine. Replications are working correctly within the
child domain and back to the forest. I'm out of idea's and have come up with
zero info on this anywhere else on the web, I hope maybe someone hear has a
    fresh perspective.

    Thanks,
    Ryan

running netdiag (on the DC) would probably help finding the problem.

  3. Not seeing anything glaring in netdiag. Unless its the WINS warning..but I
get the same when running netdiag on our Parent domain and gpresult works
fine there. But thank you I had not checked there yet.
