Having difficulty installing IE 8 on Vista Home Premium 64-bit

My PC came pre-installed with both the 32-bit and the 64-bit version of
Internet Explorer 7 installed. I am running Vista Home Premium 64-bit.

My default browser (the IE icon on my desktop) is pointing to the 32-bit
    version of IE 7.

When I tried to upgrade last night to IE 8, only the 64-bit version was
upgraded. The 32-bit version stayed at IE 7. So when I double click the
default IE icon, the browser hangs since this is the old version.

I take it that for IE8, you only need one version, so my question is how do
I uninstall the 32-bit version of IE and when do I do it, before or after the
    upgrade to IE 8.

  2. Installing the 64-bit version should have also installed the 32-bit version,
    Jim.

    1. What anti-virus application or security suite is installed, is your
subscription current, and is it supported in IE8? What anti-spyware
applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?
Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed
    IE8?

    2. Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

  4. Did you disable all components of NIS 2009 (including the firewall & any
Norton Add-ons) and then enable the Windows Firewall before installing IE8?

Is your version of NIS 2009 supported in IE8? (I know that Symantec
released a free "version 3" upgrade for Norton 360 so that it's now
compatible with IE8 but I don't know if there's a similar upgrade for NIS,
    Jim.)
