Help: Error: Agent failed detecting with reason: 0x8024400e

    Andrew Guest

    I have 110 computers, about a 50/50 mix of 2000, and XP.
All the 2000 machines are showing "not yet reported" with the error: Agent
    failed detecting with reason: 0x8024400e.
    XP machines are fine.
    WSUS server is W2K3 SP1

Any idea what is wrong, or how to fix?
    Thanks,

  2. Hi,

Seeing recent parts of the content in the file Windowsupdate.log (no
space in the name) would maybe help us help you better.

If you use WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe to install the updated Windows
    Update Agent, what happens then?

    WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe for x86-based computers:

Installing WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe stays: "Install is not needed since
Windows Update Agent is already installed".

Windows update.log from an affected client after running wuauclt /detectnow:

  4. The 0x8024400e message is typically a server-side generated message. The
actual text of the error is:
    0x8024400e - SUS E PT SOAP SERVER
The message was OK but server couldn't process at the moment

What do you find in the IIS Logs for the time frame 8/26 8:26am (give or
take a couple of minutes if the clocks are not synchronized).

  5. Hi,

There isn't much information around for error 0x8024400e and what
    could cause it.

One person (Trond Hindenes) found that it was caused by a mess up of
port 80 and 8520, as soon as he fixed that, the error was gone.

    Here is what Trond posted:

    From: "trondhindenes" <>
    Newsgroups: microsoft.public.softwareupdatesvcs
Subject: Re: Cross - Post Of Error: 0x8024400E
    Date: 27 Jul 2005 04:05:35 -0700
    http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.softwareupdatesvcs/msg/d445d263d7132149?hl=en&

    <quote>
I found out what caused this. I installed WSUS on port 8520 (or
whatever por number it suggests), and so I specified the update
locatoin in GPO as "http://wsusserver:8520". When I check the IIS
console, I see that it still places some web services on the site
running port 80, so I should probably just have written
"http://wsusserver" instead. The weird thing is that Pre-XP2 clients
were able to use this setting without problems, while SP2 clients
    reported the error above.

I have reinstalled WSUS to run on the default web site now, and
    everything seems to run fine.

Actually, the problem I'm seeing is the reverse. Pre XP2 clients don't work,
    and XP2 clients work fine.
The WSUS was initially installed on port 80.

I suspect the problem is comming from this, after posting my previous
    message I spotted it:
    2005-08-30 11:18:51 W3SVC678033447 172.16.0.16 POST
    /ClientWebService/client.asmx - 80 - 172.16.0.140 Windows-Update-Agent 500 0 0

Response code 500 is "Internal Server Error".
