!!!Help me please!!! Move WSS3.0 SP1 on SBS 2003 to WSS3.0 SP2 on SBS 2008 x64

  1. I posted this in the Sharepoint General NG originally but thought becasue it
is related to a SBS migration that perhaps I could get some feedback on the
SBS portion for others who have done the migration. So please excuse me if
this is considered a double post.

I just finished installing and configuring my new SBS 2008 Standard Server.
I did a SBS 2003 to SBS 2008 migration that seems to have worked well but
did not do the Sharepoint portion of the migration before I ended the
migration process and dcpromo'd the old SBS 2003 server. I didn't think this
was related to my SBS 2003 server as it appeared to be for only migrating
WSS 2.0 companyweb. Regardless it is still online and is partially
accessable. I had WSS 3.0 SP1 installed in a side by side installation with
the old WSS 2.0 website as per MS technical documents. We never used the old
companyweb WSS 2.0 site after we installed WSS 3.0.
My new companyweb on SBS 2008 was installed and created during the
installation. Both internal and external access is accessable and working
    well.
Quite obvious what I need to do and that is get the old WSS 3.0 from SBS
2003 server to my new SBS 2008 server.

    Subjects of concerns for me.........
    1. What version of SQL do I need to install on my SBS 2008 server? The old
SBS 2003 server was running SQL 2005 Express that was installed with WSS
3.0. The new SBS 2008 server has only the Native Embedded version of SQL
    2005.
    2. Does coming from WSS 3.0 x86 to a WSS 3.0 x64 machine a concern?
    3. Do I need to create a new web application and site on my SBS 2008 server
or can I use the current SBS 2008 companyweb site? (my prefered option)

My end result although I'm not sure is possible would be to have SQL 2008
Server or 2008 Express on the SBS 2008 server for my DB server and to use
the current companyweb site on the SBS 2008 server.

  5. Hi Merv,
Just another thought and question. What about SQL? SBS 2003 WSS3.0 site was
using SQL 2005 Express that was installed with WSS3.0. SBS 2008 server is
using the native embedded SQL for companyweb. Should I install SQL Express
    2005. Can I go with SQL 2008?

  6. The 'native" SQL installed by SBS 2008 is SQL 2005 Express (used for the
SBSMonitoring DB, et al). I'd stick with it unless you have a need for SQL
2008 Express. As I recall, installing SQL 2008 Express on SBS 2008 is not a
    straightforward procedure.
