how do you get windows xp to update???

Discussion in 'Windows Update' started by Herbert C Lebovitz, Sep 4, 2005.

  1. Click Start, select Run and type in: services.msc
    Click OK

Right-click on Background Intelligent Transfer Service and select Properties.
    Click on Log On tab.
In Hardware Profile field (located at the bottom), see if the Service status is
    Disabled for your Hardware Profile.
If it is click to highlight the Hardware Profile in this field, then click on the
Enable button and then click on Apply.
Now, click on General tab and click on Start under Service Status.

    Also check
Click Start, select Run, then type in: SERVICES.MSC
Make sure the "Remote Procedure Call (RPC)" is started and on automatic.

  2. Did both.
    Both show running and automatic.
    Still no luck.

  4. sc queryex wuauserv yields same as yours

I have no AU icon on SysTray

When I run the tasklist command it tells me it is not recognized as
    internal command, etc.

    sc qc wuauserv command works

bitsadmin command tells me 0 jobs are listed.

    Thanks, Herb

  5. ....

Torgeir sometimes shows that there is a way to force the installation
    of that package.

    <quote>
If it says "Install is not needed since Windows Update Agent is
already installed.", run the exe with the command line switch
    /wuforce, like this:

    WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe /wuforce
    </quote>

Try that. BTW note the space between the file name and the switch.

    Good luck

  8. That there's nothing to do? <eg>

BTW I noticed a referenced to MUI elsewhere in that log.
Another user (Tablet PC user IIRC) who had references to MUI
was able to get somewhere by removing all his languages.

  10. Oops. I must have misread MU as MUI. ;o

So, have you been doing your updating via another method?
That could account for zero updates being available.

Getting prompted with them and then declining them?
If the link "Offer updates again that I've previously hidden" is not greyed
click on it and see how your log changes then. (E.g., Run... wuaucpl.cpl
    to see that link.)

BTW I haven't been impressed with WU's verbose logging but activating
it may give you more clues about why you are seeing 0 updates.

    <title>KB902093 - How to read the Windowsupdate.log file</title>

BTW when you visit WU do you go there or to MU?
I'm wondering if having MU active would make any difference for AU.
If so, you could try disabling MU (or vice versa <eg>).

Never get prompted with anything. It doesn't go that far.

"So, have you been doing your updating via another method?

    Can't update any other way.

I got to iexplorer - tools - windows update. I get the beginning of
    page.
I can bring up Word and go to website and check for upgrades
and it goes through the check and says none,

"BTW I haven't been impressed with WU's verbose logging but
    activating

I don't know how to do that.

It's been close to a month since I last had an update.

    Thanks,

  12. Hmmm

    So this does not work?

Direct Download of Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Windows XP
    http://snipurl.com/8bqy

You can download all updates and burn them to CD..

You can download each update manually - based off the KB Article number,
etc. That way you can back it up/burn a CD of them in case you need them or
use them to keep a slipstream/integrated (updated) Windows XP CD.

How to use the Windows Update Catalog
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323166
(In order to use the Windows Update Catalog, you must use IE to get the
    patches..)

    Windows Update Catalog

(In order to use the Windows Update Catalog, you must use IE to get the
    patches..)

Integrate software updates into your Windows installation source files

    Really customize your CD..
    http://unattended.msfn.org/

Produce an up-to-date XP Distibution CD
    http://xpcreate.com/

You can see the critical (security and other) patches released for a given
    month using the following:

    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms##-***.mspx

At the end of this line you see "ms##-***.mspx" .. If you simply replace ##
with the two-digit year and the *** with the three character month
abbreviation, you will see the list of "critical" and "important" patches
for that month (since it only happens once a month usually, if you check by
the second Tuesday (wait until afternoon) of each month - you should be
fine) - note that future months will not work.

    As an example...

    December 2004's patches..
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-dec.mspx

    March 2005's patches..
None released.. so that one will fail...

    May 2005's patches..
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms05-may.mspx

    July 2005's patches..
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms05-jul.mspx

Once you get on the page with each month's list of patches.. You can go to
the related KB articles and grab the appropriate files from there.

  13. I have SP2 already installed from a CD-disk.
    And auto updating is ON.

    Thanks,
    Herb

  14. That's great - not my point at all though.

Have you tried to get the updates PAST SP2 manually and install them
    one-by-one?
The methods I lay out in my post demonstrate how you can do this..

Sure - you can say you shouldn't have to do this - but if that doesn't work
either - then that is one more clue to your problem.

    I'll make it even easier..

Below this point is a batch script that has links in it pointing to the
direct download page for every patch released for Windows XP since SP2
through August 2005. If this batch script was created and saved in a
directory with all of the patches listed in it and then ran - it would
install every one of those patches for you. All you have to do is cut/paste
the text to a *.bat/*.cmd file, save that in a directory and then use the
link for each patch to download the actual patch and save it in that same
directory. You could even save all of those to CD and have them in case you
decide to rebuild your machine at some point - you would have less to
install from the Internet and more locally. Can even slipstream those
patches (most of them) directly into your original installation CD and
create a new CD that is more up to date.

---- COPY ABOVE THIS LINE -----

There may be some line wrapping to some of the URLs when you copy/paste it
into a text file - watch for that.. Each "section" should only have ONE
line that does not start with "REM".

Let us know how it goes!

  15. Did as you suggested.
    Downloaded all the files.
Ran what I called fixer.bat in a cmd box.
    Went through without any errors.

However, I still can't get past the beginning notice

Checking if your computer has the latest version of Windows updating
software for use with the website…

The website uses ActiveX controls to determine which version of the
software your computer is running. If you see an ActiveX warning, make
sure the control is digitally signed by Microsoft before installing it
    or allowing it to run.

Also the review and restore options on the left are grayed out.

I brought up IE - tools - windows update to get to the above.

    Thanks,

    Herb

Well, at least we know you are updated now. heh
You can at least feel some relief in that fact.

    Let's keep plugging though....

    Suggestion (1)
    --------------
    In Internet Explorer:
    TOOLS --> INTERNET OPTIONS

    PROGRAMS tab..
    MANAGE ADD-ONS button..

Make sure the following (I think this is right) exist and are enabled:

    MUWebControl Class
    Update Class
    Windows Genuine Advantage
    WUWebControl Class

    Reboot.

Open Internet Explorer and manually go to this page:
    http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/

    Suggestion (2)
    --------------
    Start --> Run

    CMD

    Click OK.

Enter these in Command Prompt Window ONE at a time, pressing ENTER after
    entering each one:
(Patience on the first and last ones especially..)

    net stop wuauserv
    regsvr32.exe wuapi.dll
    regsvr32.exe wups.dll
    regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
    regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll
    regsvr32.exe MSXML3.dll
    net start wuauserv

    Close the CMD Prompt Window.

Open Internet Explorer and manually go to this page:
    http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/

  17. Only the first two are listed and enabled. How do you add the last
    two????

    I went no further.

  18. Did the answer below give you any further ideas.
Should I do the regserv items without
Windows Genuine Advantage and WUWebControl Class installed???

Can you give me a listing so I can download and install????

At least that way I can stay currect.

    Thanks,

  20. Try getting a listing yourself.

    Run... wuauclt.exe /detectnow

You should get the AU icon in the taskbar.
Doubleclick on it to get your list of updates.

If you don't see that icon make sure that you aren't hiding it
using the taskbar notification settings. My preference for that icon
is Always Show... otherwise it seems to always hide itself.
Hmm... I suppose a temporary alternative to that would be to uncheck
Hide inactive icons so that you would always see *all* notification area
    icons.

If it doesn't show up that way either check with Task Manager
if wuauclt.exe is running (e.g. in the Processes tab).
In fact, it would be a good idea to do this check before using the above
Run... command just to be sure you know that one you see is one you
started and not one that was already started. However, you may be able
to discriminate the latter case after the fact by making sure that you have
User Name column enabled (e.g. via the View menu) and the option
Show processes from all users checked on the Processes tab (at the bottom).

In any case check your windowsupdate.log to see what happened
as a result of trying the command. It might be an idea to rename
the old windowsupdate.log first so you get a clear picture of what
all was done by the command. The command should allow a new
    log to be started then.

    Good luck

    Robert
