How do you tell what codec you need?

    I see all of these codec problems, and have been having a few myself. So
    I'm curious to see how you can tell exactly what codec you need.

    TIA

    You find out you need a codec when something you want to play doesn't work;
    then you go get the codec.

    Yes but how do you figure out which codec it is that you need? I am having
    some problems getting WMP to play some .avi files that I have. In the past it
    told me which codec I needed and also where to find it but now Im just
    getting an error message C00D1199: Cannot play the file and seen as WMP can
    play .avi files im sure that it is a codec problem but its not tellin me
    which codec it is that I require.

    This doesn't answer the question at all. The question was "to see how you
    can tell exactly what codec you need." I know that I need a new codec, but
    WHAT codec.
